Edm 8 - Cal 4

It was an excellent game, and as you mentioned, the 3 pointer made the score really not do the game justice... IMNSHO that 3 point rule cannot be taken out of the league fast enough, but I digress.

I think Calgary actually had the better of the play, and were much improved over the last outing. Defense was tight, and they created great pressure. In the end it was the transition game that again bit the United in the ass, as they got caught twice in the fourth, and it was the difference. They dictated the majority of play, and were great at winning balls along the boards. Really established themselves in the midfield, and Reyes did a good job quarterbacking the offence, but more often than not they ended up wasting it with ill advised long shots that largely missed the net. If Calgary could establish themselves a little better deep and improve it's finishing they'd be tough to beat.

Edmonton hung in there, and actually never trailed. Like last game, they made the most of their chances, and were great in the other end blocking shots. Again Rattee and Sestito were a force in their own end. Ilko continues to play great in net, when he leaves it to play the ball the story is different lol, but as long as it`s shot at him he`s stellar.

Attendance was in the 700 range, not terrible, but I know they were hoping for more.

Disagree with you on that one. I like the CMISL scoring (1 & 3 point) better than the MISL (2 & 3 point). It adds an excitement especially late in the game. If you are behind start launching long range bombs. The team that is ahead can't just sit back and protect a lead because it can evaporate quickly.

Problem is it also has the opposite effect early.. like in the prior game Edmonton's second goal was a 3 pointer and made it 4-0 instead of 2-0... after that Calgary just kept bombing away from way out there, never really getting decent chances and completely ruining the flow of the game. Add to that they got caught a couple times because of it and it ended up in their own net, and it only compounds the problem. There is too much an element of luck to it, and it really takes the drama and flow out of the game.

I guess that is one downside. But I would question the coach about telling the players not to panic. If it is 4-0 early on then that is different than being behind 3 or 4 late in a game. Whittle away at the lead.

There might be something to the MISL 2 and 3 point system. 1 and 3 might be too much of a spread. I always wonder why they come up with variations of rules when the MISL game is fairly well established.

We'll see what they do next year. For this year we will have to live with it.
