gkhs
This is a bit of a weird project; using the IFFHS league rankings (which are pretty questionable) and a little formula I made up to rank lower leagues, I created this ranking of the leagues that Canadian's play in. -- League Ranking</u> -- 01 English Premier League (1)-- 3 Begovic,Edgar,Stalteri 02 Primera Division (1)-------- 1 de Guzman 03 German Bundesliga 1 (1)----- 2 Gyaki,Imhof 04 English Championship (2)---- 2 De Vos,Hume 05 Chilean Primera Div. I think you could debate the Championship being stronger than the Dutch league. I think the strongest teams in the dutch league like PSV, Ajax, Feyenoord would kill the top Championship teams like Watford, Bristol and Stoke city. Also, whose to say the bottom teams in the Championship like Scunnthorpe and Colchester are better than the bottom Dutch league teams like Excelsior and Willem!? I think the Dutch league is stronger than the second tier English league!
gkhs
Just to confirm, I didn't use any judgment with this list, there are some rankings that are obviously questionable, but I just used the numbers provided by IFFHS.
redhat
Where's Brennan, Lombardo, etc? They don't count as MLS? (Didn't see the "Canadians Abroad" title)[:I] Great list, however debatable regarding league ranking. How did the Chilean Primera division got ahead of Bundesliga 2 or the Dutch Eredivisie? Or the Vietnamese First Division being ahead of Dutch Eerste Divisie 2? The list does confirm the large number of Canadians playing at a high level. fishman
Interesting to see the Romania Liga 1 is listed in the Top 10. When Lars moved there, many seemed to hint that it was a graveyard. Based on these rankings, he appears to have stepped up from the Norwegian Tippeligaen.

Most of us thought this was a lateral move, no one has suggested it was a graveyard. With Romania ranked 10th and Norway 13th it seems both league are about the same level according to this ranking. BTW, CCC seems overated in this ranking. Good job nonetheless.
Guest Ed
If you compare the number of players abroad and the level of leagues they are playing at to what we had 10 years ago, it is unbelievably better.

This was my kneejerk reaction too (maybe not a graveyard, but a minor step down, perhaps). I was pleased to see the Romanian league listed so high. quote:Originally posted by loyola BTW, CCC seems overated in this ranking. Good job nonetheless. This is a weird anomaly (its a result of the formula I kind of pulled out of my ass); I was happy with the placement of the Bundesliga 2, but not some of the other lower tiered leagues. Joe MacCarthy
I find it interesting that Canadians playing in the 4th levels of Italy are hyped (in these forums) and rarely move up while the players in 4th level Germany often progress to bigger and better things. Kudos to Ed for tracking these players throughout the years. Germany has been very good to us. Heil.
