finchster
I have thought about this recently with the efforts of Liverpool fans to buy their team back and the efforts of myfootballclub.co.uk, can soccer fans in Canada do the same thing? I am not speaking of buying an existing team, more so about buying an expansion franchise in a lower league USL, USL-2, PDL for example. I figure that most investors are weary of investing in soccer in Canada because they are not sure how successful it will be. It wouldn’t be wise to run it like these organization want, just put up the money run it not for profit and leave the management to whoever gets hired. I figure if the fans could put up some money and build a successful business model local investors would want to buy it and this would stimulate the local soccer scene. I don’t want to hear this is a crazy idea etc, I just want to know if there is an appetite around here to try this?
Richard
Perfectly possible but pro soccer in Canada has a history of losing money with the possible exception of TFC. I doubt a USL-2 or PDL team could ever be made to break even. Montreal and Vancouver continue in USL-1 because they have wealthy backers. The owning fans would have to get used to pouring money in year after year and lots of it. Something like this was tried by the Vancouver 86ers during the dark years and it failed. finchster
I think we can agree it is a different time for soccer in Canada than the late 80's early 90's were in respect for what happend to the 86ers. I can understand about the wealthy owners as well keeping the whitecaps and impact afloat, so i guess the only way fan intervention would work in Canada's case would be some major sponsor along with fan intervention? Trillium
http://www.forfarathletic.co.uk/official/news.php?id=1114&season=2007 ... shares for sale in Scotish team... get a thousand fans together and you can own a team in Scotland... 1000X200 = 200,000 pounds.....that should take control. finchster
Haha I am not interested in owning a team or any part of a forigen team[8D]. I was just wondering if this same kind of fan intervention could work in the Canadian context to advance the game
