Arrrgh Canada!

By Gerry Dobson

As sketchy as the flow of information has been, here is the rather fascinating story of Canada's little Martinique adventure.

You may have heard that St. Lucia was originally the opposition, but when that fell through, the team kept their original travel itinerary to that island. Then the plan was to hop on a boat to neighbouring Martinique, but that boat broke down and the lads found themselves on something like a fishing boat for the two-hour trip. The players I talked to actually loved it -- a great bonding experience they said. If you've ever been on one of those Caribbean booze cruises while on vacation, you get the picture. Although with a match upcoming, this cruise was somewhat drier.

After a flight back to St. Lucia, a delay there meant a stay-over at a swanky hotel in Castries which also sat well with the players. Anyways, this is all happening with team manager Morgan Quarry in sickbay in Florida with pneumonia. Never a dull moment!

Let's also identify, for the record, the starting eleven. Pat Onstad was in goal. From right to left, Chris Williams, Marco Reda, Adrian Cann and Chris Pozniak at the back. Martin Nash was in as the holding midfielder with Adrian Serioux and Kevin Harmse in front of him. Issey Nakajima-Farran -- not his brother Paris -- patrolled the right wing with goal scorer Dwayne DeRosario on the left. Charles Gbeke was the lone target man up top.

On another front, here's an update on the Toronto FC goalkeeping situation. Greg Sutton has looked good in training with the Nats and hooks up with Toronto on the gulf side this week. Kenny Stamatopoulos is out of the picture this year with his return to Norway. I talked with him recently and he seems settled with Tromso and is having a good camp in preparation for the season re-start. He's with the club for stints in the Canary Islands and Spain and seems destined to spend the immediate future there. Josh Wagenaar has had conversations with TFC but there's nothing solid. He's officially without a club now and had an offer from Toronto. The money was right, but in the end, they couldn't agree to a deal. I get the feeling something could still happen there. That's because second round draft choice Brian Edwards is the only cover they have right now.

More to come from Bradenton later in the week …

Interesting after all we had said about Paris playing- turns out he wasn't

Finally, someone actually tries to dig up some info in spite of the CSA's cloak of secrecy. Thanks, Gerry!

Get well soon, Morgan!
