AvroArrow
http://www.sportsnet.ca/soccer/2008/02/01/tfc_mo_carver/ Mo becomes the "GM" and John Carver, formerly of Luton Town in England, takes over as coach. Now all we need is a couple Union Jacks and some policeman wearing bobby hats and we'll have a real English first division club!
Eric
The british way for soccer in Canada is never been the better way. Too bad, I had hopes to watch TFC playing enjoyable soccer in Toronto, I guess I have to wait longer. I hope some day they will remember that the Metros Croatia were the only real championship team in a USA/Canada League (NASL) and they were not british. The Whitecaps were champs I think, though maybe you don't count that. And the Caps always had an important British presence. If the presence is good, who cares? The problem is that everyone who had seen Mo coach before said he was mediocre, he proved it. And this new guy has the chance to prove his worth too. In any case, MLSE is not so dumb that they will insist on inferior coaching just because a couple of their guys like British soccer. If it continues to not work, they'll fix it. Eric
You are absolutely right Jeffrey www.whitecapsfc.com/club/history/1979_nasl/ but who was the coach for that team?
Richard
Who was the coach of the 1986 Canadian World Cup Team? Hard to find anybody more British in every respect including soccer than Tony Waiters.

AvroArrow
Don't get me wrong, I'd rather watch English soccer then Italian any day. I don't think the British influence is necessarily a bad thing.
Canuck Oranje
Well, the EPL is hardly English anymore. While I think this move is a step in the right direction, the question I have is whether this was the best move available.

Cheeta
I think it's a good move. At the least one in the right direction. The only concern TFC fans could reasonably have is if Carver can get his head around the MLS game sooner rather than later. He'll be the coach and Mo the manager. I was very critical of Mo's hiring as the manager (in the traditional football coach/manager roll) but in a dedicated managerial roll separated from coaching responsibilities there's no denying he knows how MLS works. This move puts Mo squarely into his element. John Carver's coaching pedigree is light years ahead of Trader Mo's. Not spectacular but if it was he wouldn't be for MLS. The two men might blend nicely together. I'm sure they'll butt heads very quickly when it comes to player acquisitions but that's the dynamic of that sort of structure and isn't necessarily a bad thing. SthMelbRed
If you want to look for another positive in this, it's that Carver was assistant to Sir Bobby Robson at Newcastle. If you recall, at that time Newcastle did play some nice, attacking football, albeit with Alan Shearer as the focal point. Speed and wingers were integral parts of their overall tactical strategy. Maybe you'll get some decent entertainment value out of this appointment in TO.

I hope Carver is able to get off to a good start with TFC and I sincerely wish him all the best. I'll give Mo some credit for this hiring, if for nothing else he has established a fall guy if the team does not show improvement (sorry for my snide cynicism). Richard
Remains to be seen just how this will play on game days. Remember, the British terminology has the manager as the head honcho. Head Coach is usually third level down after the assistant manager. The TFC report says Mo will remain as team manager.

Good point BearcatSA, and he will probably make use of that opportunity. I just hope to see some nice attacking soccer, not the old kick and run british style that is even more boring to watch than italian Serie A.......wait for the opposition to make a mistake to win the game. lsir
Is TFC the CSA in disguise?????? I was really hoping they would be able to bring in some decent talent outside the British Isle's if Canadians of no interest to them.....wishful thinking!!! I love Pesh, but dont think he is the answer!
rick titus
What an absolute joke... Seriously is this guy really their best alternative? What's wrong with getting a coach from the MLS. An ex-player with pedigree like Robin Fraser or the assistant coach Paul Bravo with the Galaxy. They should've picked someone that knows the league because that is a really important factor. This guy will take at least half a season to even understand the style of play. He will probably come in not having enough respect for the MLS level, and it will bite him in the ass! I hope for the teams sake he puts the right players out there, because if he does, it won't matter if he is a good coach or a bad one. The CSA might be running TFC for real, because the decision to get this guy seems like an idiotic CSA move!

I really think we should be looking to import coaching expertise from countries like Argentina. They are two countries that generally play good technical football but with a style that wouldn't necessarily take us away from our traditional strengths of hard-nosed play and commitment. Richard
I am not going to condemn or priase TFC over this coaching move until I see what kind of team they field and how it performs on the field once the season begins. That's all that really counts, the coach's nationality is truly irrelevant. There was plenty of criticism of Mo Johnson's coaching decisions last season as I recall. rick titus
I think the team looks good, but the coach remains to be seen. I think with the talent on the team at present they should be good whether the coach is or not.
Eric
This is funny........ but true. Take a stroll down to your local park today, and you will immediately see what is wrong with English football. In the games being played there, you will see why an Italian is managing the England national team. <http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/main.jhtml;jsessionid=DA1KEM5D0DVLNQFIQMFSFF4AVCBQ0IV0?xml=/sport/2008/02/01/sfndia101.xml> , why fewer than 30 per cent of the players starting in Premier League games this weekend are English, why 'Goal of the Month' is dominated by Portuguese, Spaniards and Brazilians. lsir
Furthermore, to import a coach is one thing, but not having Canadian coach's in the mix as assistant's is even worse. From what I hear, Carmine Issaco and exception local coach in the GTA with extensive knowledge of the local scene and emerging players was released from the coaching staff. Where is TFC's support to Canadian Soccer and its development????????????????????????????????????
