Canada's men's national team will face Martinique tomorrow night in their first international friendly of the 2008 season. The Canadian squad arrived in Fort-au-France in anticipation of the first match between the two senior sides since the 2002 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Canadian coach Dale Mitchell has had his squad of 18 men training together in Fort Lauderdale, FL since 20 January. Mitchell primarily called players from North American-based clubs who were out of season. The camp includes a number of Major League Soccer and United Soccer Leagues stars including 2007 adidas Canadian Player of the Year Dwayne De Rosario.

The Wednesday match will have a 20.00 kick off. The match will be played at the Stade Louis-Achille.

Coach Mitchell is currently assessing talent for the upcoming 2010 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. Canada's first qualifying match will be 15 June on the road against Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Canada defeats Martinique

FINAL - Canada 1:0 Martinique

Canada’s men’s national team defeated Martinique tonight in its first international game of the 2008 season. The Canucks won 1:0 on the strength of a Dwayne De Rosario goal in the 25th minute.

The Canadian side had numerous chances, including two off a pair of crosses from Dave Simpson which would have put the contest away. Martinique did shore up an offensive attack in the last 10 minutes, but the Canadian team held their ground and earned the victory.

Six players earned their first senior cap with the Canadian team, five of whom were amongst the starting XI. Tyler Rosenlund, Paris Nakajima-Farran, Adrian Cann, Charles Gbeke and Dave Simpson all started under coach Dale Mitchell while Dejan Jakovic was a late substitute in the 80th minute. Subs Chris Williams and Antonio Ribeiro earned their second caps with the senior squad.

Mitchell, meanwhile, earned his first win as head coach of the senior side. Since taking over in August 2007, Mitchell has guided Canada to one win, two draws and one loss. The Canadian team is currently assessing talent for Canada’s upcoming run to the FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010. While CONCACAF’s first phase of 2010 World Cup Qualification begins in February, Canada will wait until the second phase to play their first game on 15 June in Saint Vincent & the Grenadines.

The Canadian squad has been training together in Florida since 20 January and arrived in Fort-au-France, Martinique by boat on Monday. The Wednesday night match was played at the Stade Louis-Achille. They fly to St. Lucia on Thursday for a day of training before heading back to Florida to complete their camp.

That is a great article by Ben! Earlier in the day, my father and I were lamenting the same thing, how many countries in the world would have their national team so poorly covered? In this day and age of technology there is absolutely no excuse for not having more details sent home, I would think it can't be that difficult to have someone doing a live text as the BBC does for virtually every game in Britain! Then again maybe our media are somewhat guilty of not sending a reporter,if I was Ben I'd volunteer for that gig! Anyway it's good to see some new caps and Dero scoring, just wish I knew more about it!

Somewhat guilty? You think?

It's bad enough that an elementary school student council could probably have provided better info about the match than the CSA, but it's confusing to me that a journalist doesn't appear to have the wherewithall to find other ways to gather information.

Who else did Mr. Knight call about the match besides the CSA (presuming he actually called them)? Does he not have any contacts with specific players on the roster? Surely his Globe and Mail's press credentials carry some clout when making phone calls and requesting information.

It's not a Fox News Alert flash to tell us how incompetent the CSA is in its different capacities. We know! I think it would have been a far better piece of journalism if Mr. Knight documented the ways in which he worked really hard to get info about the game and the camp in general in spite of the obstacles he encountered. He could have done it in a Rick Reilly of SI style and could have been quite clever and humourous. But instead we get some rant that loosely passes as journalism in today's world.

I'm sorry for my harsh tone here, but I'm not willing to give kudos to someone for stating the bleeding obvious!

It looks like Dobson was able to dig up something about this match:

We beat the Danish side on Sunday 2-0. In spite of the inevitably dubious CSA reports which we will receive, is there a chance that any of our other soccer media types can actually do some real journalism and dig up some info about this game for those who are interested? Or am I going to read yet another piece dedicated entirely to flogging the dead horse of CSA incompetence?

The CSA has finally posted a game summary. The original summary posted had several errors. Tyler Rosenlund and Paris Nakajima-Farran did not receive Caps as originally reported. The original game report even showed Paris as a starter.

A complete summary:

Will the Canadians in the Martinique match receive caps for the game, as Martinique isn't a full FIFA member?

^There are two seperate issues here, Caps and being Cap-tied.

I spoke with the CSA and yes the players who played in the game will receive a Cap for the game.

e.g. De Rosario is now credited with 45 Caps for Canada and the four players who played their first game will all be credited with one Cap.

On the other hand for FIFA purposes those four players are not Cap-tied to Canada for the reasons

mentioned above.
