hamiltonfan Posted January 25, 2008 Share Posted January 25, 2008 Thursday - January 17, 2008 Cash prize boost The CSL's Open Canada Cup is attracting wider attention while it continues to be the only club competition in Canada open to all senior men's teams - amateur or pro. And the 2008 prize package is up to $25,000, which includes $10,000 to the top amateur team, even if that team doesn't make the final. Canada's only pro league expects more teams from the provinces and even the territories, to take part with each passing season. The ultimate aim, of course, is to see Canada with a total club championship, which is denied only two of the 40 nations that make up CONCACAF, the continent-wide governing soccer body for North America, Central America and the Caribbean. Canada and Puerto Rico are those two. The final weekend of the popular senior men's competition, now in its sixth season, will be held in Toronto this September. That's the first time in Canada's largest city and will follow playdowns in other parts of the country, starting in May. Trois-Rivieres Attak is the current Open Canada Cup holder, having defeated Columbus Clan of the Vancouver Metro Soccer League's Premier Division, 3-0, at London last September 3. Regular league games will run to late September followed by the playoffs which lead to the CSL Championship Final at the end of October - an almost six-month long campaign.
