The match was set after Canada learned its 2 February friendly with St. Lucia was cancelled. Canada's men's national team is currently holding its first training camp of the 2008 season in Fort Lauderdale, FL. The team will fly to Fort-de-France on Monday before playing Martinique at 20.00 on Wednesday night. The 30 January match will be the third meeting between the two senior men's teams. Canada won 2:1 on penalty kicks over Martinique at the 2002 CONCACAF Gold Cup and drew 1:1 with Martinique at the 1993 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Canada's head coach Dale Mitchell is currently assessing talent for the upcoming run to the FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010. While CONCACAF’s first phase of 2010 World Cup Qualification begins in February, Canada will wait until the second phase to play their first game on 15 June in Saint Vincent & the Grenadines. ---------------------------------------- An away game in Martinique is almost better preparation for St. Vincent, I think. I haven't been following their football but I still remember the scare they gave us at the Gold Cup in 2002.
jpg75
I agree, should be stiffer competition...
loyola
Won't be an easy game with the players we're having in Florida. Guadeloupe and Martinique have gave us some solid opposition in the past. The only negative is the game won't count on the FIFA ranking (or maybe it's a positive...).
bungey
At 2006/07 Caribbean Cup Martinique had the following results: Martinique 4 - 0 Dominica Martinique 1 - 0 Saint Martin Guadeloupe 4 - 0 Martinique Haiti 1 - 0 Martinique
redhat
Martinique ... at the 2002 Gold Cup, Jason Bent's final PK and Lars' heroics saved us from embarrassment and led us to a semi-final showdown with the USA. Martinique will be a good friendly and perfect test from complacency.
nolando
Good to see that the Voyageur pressure forced the CSA to reconsider. Now how much do we have to pay to get Estonia to cancel ;>
Toronto MB
This is a win - win I believe. Martinique will certainly provide stiffer competition than St. Lucia. I remember our match vs them at the 2002 GC, and also saw them play the US in Foxboro at the 2003 edition. They have some relative quality, and I remember their keeper being a real stand-out. On the flip-side, with the C-/D squad we have assembled, there is no guarantee we will win this one. And thus Martinique being a non-FIFA nation, a poor showing won't affect out standings. Regardless, Martinique should give Mitchell a better idea as to how some of these depth guys can really compete at any kind of competitive level. Toronto MB
Not too thrilled about the venue though. I hope the quality of the pitch is good enough not to affect the game. http://www.worldstadiums.com/stadium_pictures/middle_america/martinique/fort_france_achille.shtml It is Martinique's secondary stadium, their major venue holds 28,000 - not bad. Winnipeg Fury
This won't count for FIFA points, will it ?
CanadasBest
I guess it won't since Martinique are not a member of FIFA.
