The Scores:

-----------

Calgary 9 - Winnipeg 0

Ouch. Calgary owned this game. Forechecking and pressure defense. Calgary pretty much owned the game with Winnipeg way too defensive and not able to challenge.

Calgary 7 - Winnipeg 2

Winnipeg played much better and had a 2-0 lead in the second half. Calgary was putting their shots into the upper seats 8 or 9 times so they didn't get many rebounds or force the goalie to save many. Calgary also was playing some of their younger players but still won once they started hitting the net with their shots.

Edmonton 9 - Saskatoon 2

This game was closer than the score indicates. Saskatoon played good but Edmonton controlled the play. Heavy and effective use of the goalie as a player by Edmonton. Hint to Edmonton's opponents, on all set plays cover # 13. From sharp angles he can one-time a rolling ball to the far side, top corner of the net reliably. Just about unstoppable if you let him take it.

Edmonton 6 - Winnipeg 3

It wasn't as close as the score would make it show. Winnipeg's lone goal was a long range 3 pointer. The goalie had it lined up to catch but the defender in front on him tried to clear it with a header and deflected it off the top of his head into his own net. Here again very effective and repeated use of the goalie by Edmonton. Edmonton controlled throughout.

Calgary 6 - Saskatoon 2

Best game of the day. Once again the game was closer than the score would indicate. Sask had the better chances early and forced Calgary's goalie to make 6 difficult saves. Just Saskatoon's luck he did. Calgary got a 4 minute power play on the only yellow card of the day but couldn't score. Then Sask gets a power play and Calgary scores short handed. 1-0 and off we go. Late in the game Sask kept trying the long range shots to get 3 points and they have some serious firepower but didn't score any.

Other notes:

------------

The carpet showed some bubbles but held up pretty good. There were only one or two instances of the seams coming up. They fixed it and play went on with only a minor delay. I asked one of the Sask players after the game how it was and he said pretty good but very hard. Better than Edmonton but still hard. It seems almost too worn out and stopping was a problem for several players. The lack of friction made the ball get away from players unless the pass and reception was crisp. This played into Calgary and Edmonton's favor as they were the best passing teams.

The crowd was fairly light. Lots of snow in Calgary today but I was hoping that it would work in their favor. Nothing to do outside go watch some soccer. For the first 2 games I think there was about 400-500 maybe a bit more.

The play was very good. All the teams played hard and aggressive soccer. Good action and fast pace to all the games. Calgary and Edmonton have the best 2 teams with Saskatoon being 3rd and showing promise. Winnipeg works hard but is off on too many things. They tend to grab and pull players down which just gets them into penalty trouble. The overall team speed wasn't there.

I would love to go see Edmonton vs Calgary tomorrow but can't. That would be the best 2 teams. If someone goes post a note on it.

I pick Saskatoon to beat Winnipeg. Could be a long season for Winnipeg.

I saw the second Wpg/Cgy game and the first half of the Edm/Sask game. It seemed pretty evident that most of the fans for the Calgary game were friends and family, or else the real hard core soccer community. I'd guess there were only a few hundred at the most for the Edm/Sask game and if you took out their family and friends it would've been half of that.

The quality of play is not great. The good players are really obvious. I went with my girlfriend who is not very knowledgeable about soccer, but she was easily able to identify the best players on the field -- such as Vignevic (sp?) and Dutra for the Drillers and Kooy, Napuri, and Reyes for Calgary.

Still, there is the potential to build on this. I'm guessing that their costs are minimal so even if they aren't generating a lot of revenue they will still continue. We'll see what happens.

I went, it was a pretty good game, Edmonton won 10-4. They jumped out to an early lead, and rode it out. Calgary had a hard time creating quality chances a lot of the time, I think the defensive combination of Sestito and Rattee really shut them down... but they would have fits at times when they would just pepper the goal with several chances in short succession. Edmonton really dominated the transition game, and got chances more consistently, I think Vignjevic quarterbacking them in the offencive third gave them a real advantage over the United as no one really established themselves to do the same in the other end... though Auvigne had his moments.

Attendance was about 800, I was VERY impressed with their game-day presentation. I thought they did a real good job, lots of staff, everything was well planned and executed, and they let the game do the entertaining and didn't let stuff like music and lame contests distract. They got all the 'little things' right, and that was something the old NPSL team never did, so a big thumbs up to them in that regard. As per the arena, aside from being all hell and gone location wise, it's a nice little facility. If they can make a go of it with 2,000 seats, it's a slick little set up.

So much for Dave Randall's comment about everyone else would have trouble beating CUFC this year. Everyone else maybe but what I saw of Edmonton playing against Saskatoon and Winnipeg I figured they could be competitive.

Sounds like Edmonton have a good setup going. 800 is not a bad draw for the location they have. Good marketing and getting the little things done right will go a long way to bringing people back.

Thanks for posting the results.

If nobody is going to update their site regularly then maybe the CMISL should just hire the people running drillersfans.com

I checked all the team and league sites but nothing. I go to DF and there are scores, comments, videos, postgame podcasts.

Like wow. Well done!
