THE HAGUE, The Netherlands (Ticker) - Canadian goalkeeper Josh Wagenaar is free to talk with Toronto FC after agreeing to terminate his contract with Dutch club ADO Den Haag.

The 22-year-old Wagenaar, who also holds Dutch nationality, joined ADO Den Haag in July 2006 but made just five appearances during an injury-plagued spell with the club after joining from Hartwick College.

"Josh Wagenaar has been injured for quite a while," ADO technical manager Peter Hofstede said. "Because of the fact that his contract ends at the end of the season and we see no role for him in the short term for the first team, the decision has been taken to terminate the contract."

Toronto is in the market for a new goalkeeper as Kenny Stamatopoulos has returned to Norway and Greg Sutton has not played since suffering a concussion while on international duty with Canada in June.

Toronto took 23-year-old goalkeeper Brian Edwards with the 28th overall pick in Friday's SuperDraft, having traded allocation money to the Los Angeles Galaxy to get the pick.

Here's what a RPB poster said on their forum:

"I was just talking with josh and he said an offer was made but not one he can sign. If the right offer comes he'd love to come but he's going to look in England and Denmark too... ".

Some posters are suggesting that TFC are offering him a Development roster contract and he wants a Senior contract.

[br]Honestly, the kid has some Dutch top filght experience, an EU passport and is only 22 years old. I don't think he'll have too much trouble catching on with another club in Europe. He'll defnitely be able to do better than the 250 a week on a developmental contract. That's for sure.

Exactly. It also sends a message about how much they expect Wagenaar to play. I don't expect the same goalkeeping merry-go-round as we saw last season, and there will be at least 2 keepers on the senior roster, so a development contract is a bit of a slap in the face to an actual pro like Josh.

The RPB poster is back on saying that the issue isn't development versus senior. Rather, it's that MLS isn't offering a guaranteed contract. JW wants a one year guaranteed. It doesn't sound like money is the issue.

The poster is indicating that he has options in England and Denmark that he will be exploring.

Mo responds today:

Johnston confirmed that TFC has made an offer to goalkeeper Josh Wagenaar, a Canadian free agent who last played in the Netherlands.

"The offer stands and we ain't budging," Johnston said. "It's up to Josh."

The quote seems to imply to me a low ball "take it or leave it" offer. It may be the only option for Wagenaar at the moment, but I wonder if it is sufficient enough to make him give up on looking for a European team.
