Canada will play Estonia a soccer friendly on March 26 in Tallinn, according to FIFA.

The game will give Dale Mitchell a tune-up before his squad takes on St. Vincent and the Grenadines in a home-and-away World Cup qualifier in June.

Canada is currently ranked 55th in the world, compared to No. 120 for Estonia. The two met in March 2003 in Tallinn, with Estonia winning 2-1.

Most recently, Estonia tied Uzbekistan 0-0, beat Andorra 2-0 and lost 2-0 to Saudi Arabia. Estonia is due to play a friendly in Poland next month before hosting the Canadians.

March 26 is an international date on the FIFA calendar, meaning most top leagues will shut down to allow players to join their national teams for international duty.

LARS ON THE MOVE -- Canadian international goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld is leaving Norway's Rosenborg to join CFR Cluj in Romania.

The 29-year-old from Edmonton has won 21 caps, most recently playing in a 2-0 November loss in South Africa.

His club career has included stints in England, Germany, Scotland and Norway. He joined Rosenborg in November 2005.

Cluj currently leads the Romanian league.

DE GUZMAN HONOURED -- Midfielder Julian de Guzman has been voted Canada's international player of the year in 2007 by the Voyageurs, a Canadian soccer supporter group.

The Deportivo la Coruna player finished first in polling conducted online on the Voyageurs' message board (www.canadian-soccer.com/forum) in December. De Guzman was listed first by two-thirds of voters.

Again? I want our squad to play games like anyone else but I would have preferred a central or south american team like we will play for WCQ. And why isnt Estonia playing in Canada? I would think its fair to play a home and home which I thought was the norm. I know most of our players are out there but it would be nice to play a team we have never played or one we havent played in a long time. Estonia is #120, not exactly a good team despite losing to them a few years back.

It's a mid-week single FIFA date. So it means only 2 or 3 days to have your players release. First, we would maybe loose 1 or 2 training sessions due to travelling issues if the game was in Canada. Second, I'm pretty sure we won't find one european country willing to travel on a single mid-week FIFA date.

Like I've stated in another thread, only 4 of our games since 2006 were against Euro teams, the rest were against CONCACAF teams or teams similar to CONCACAF styles.

We will hopefully have other opportunities to play Concacaf or SA sides in friendlies prior to the St. V series, but as loyola mentions, if we want to have a friendly at that time with our Euro-based players (most of whom aren't going to be at the still-to-be-announced Florida camp at the end of this month, early Feb.) it means playing in Europe and playing a European team.

Interesting to note that some mainstream media now seem to realize that, in order to get the real news on Canadian soccer in a timely fashion, it's best to bypass the CSA and go straight to the source at Voyageurs :-)

TFC just announced that they will play March 15-22 in South Carolina before heading back to Toronto to continue training (hopefully indoors). This means Jim Brennan may be available to make the trip overseas to play depending on his conditioning.

Not sure about other MLS players' availability, but I can't see the west coast based players (i.e. Harmse, Jazic) making the trip. It will be intersting to see if DeRo makes it over.

It would be nice to see close to a full squad for this rather than just a euro-based squad.

It's a hard date for us, and a lot of countries to fill or take too seriously.

Still, this fixture does feel like one of those "who can we play without spending a dime?" arrangements doesn't it? Whether March is a good or a bad time of the year to be saving money by playing whoever will foot the entire bill regardless of the opposition's quality is open to debate. But I will say this, I hope the CSA negotiated free NA television rights as a condition for appearing.

Hmm interesting Poland will play Estonia on 27th Feb also as a tune-up for Euro2008....Last time "we" played them was on 3feb, 2007 in the Spanish resort of Jerez de la Frontera....We beat Estonia 4-0 that time... I do belive it will be interesting as they play physically kind of like the Swedes which will be different from Iceland and CONCACAF countries.

From what I read on the "polish" game, Estonia approached us if we would be insterested to play them so I belive Canada isin't paying a dime(just like Poland), but for TV Rights.....though one, u might find a Internet Channel that shows the game....

As for ppl being disappointed that the game won't be on home turf. Well PL plays vs. Czech and Finland in Cyprus, in Feb, 2008.....lol Just as I am going there on Vacation oh well will see my hme boys play instead.

The hilarious thingis 3/10 teams in 1st Div are from Tallinn. Will see if I can get a torrent of the PL game so we can see what we are against. I hope Mitchell will callup some North American Players for the game. Does anyone know when the Squad will be scheduled to arrive in Tallinn? 2-3-4days before the game? When are clubs supposed to release the players?

Anyway Estonia will play El Salvador 2times at the end of January that will be interesting... It will give us an ides as to what kind of strenght we are looking at.

Be carefull, we've already seen a few games announced on the FIFA website only to be removed. If there's anything on the CSA website it's because the game isn't confirmed. You can write to Richard Scott (Communications guy) but I guess he'll tell you what I just told you.

BTW, looking at Jonny63's list of friendlies for CONCACAF teams, it doesn't seem like Honduras and Jamaica have scheduled games yet.

Jamaica are playing Costa Rica on Feb. 6th and T&T on Mar. 26th, both at home.

Honduras was supposed to play Jamaica on one of these dates, but the FA's of the respective nations decided against it after drawing into the same prospective group for WCQ. The Honduran fed has yet to schedule a friendly for this year...
