Canadians playing in Brazil?

I am throwing this out there. I have been spending some time over the last month learning about the business side of playing contracts in Brazil. The CBF website is very good for this because it has a very detailed and up-to-date contract registration system.

I came across a note that surprised me a little but I haven't been able to find a way to follow up as yet. That is that in a listing of the nationality of foreigners playing in Brazil, they indicate that there are two Canadians under active playing contracts in Brazil.

I suppose it is possible that they are players with dual citizenship or Canadians playing as amateurs with lower level clubs. However, I don't know that. It is also possible that the Note on foreigners under active contract is not linked into the system; but, that wouldn't seem logical.

There are a few things to keep in mind and they keep me curious.

1. Lower level clubs deal in short term contracts. Very few contracts carry-over into a new year unless they are high quality young players or front-line players with higher level clubs (Series A, B and some larger C clubs).

2. The list of active contracts with clubs that I follow have automatically been ammended as older contracts have expired and old contracts are extended and new contracts are signed.

3. A child of one Brazilian parent and one Canadian parent born in Canada is most likely to retain Canadian citezenship. At the same time, that child would likely have permanent resident status in Brazil (and likely have the ability to work in Brazil).

Again, this could be nothing and may simply be a couple of Canadians playing as amateurs somewhere in the interior of Brazil. It is not easy to discover who these players might be because there are more than 13,000 active playing contracts in Brazil.

Nevertheless, if anyone has some knowledge about these players, I am curious.

I think they are both at America and come out of the Ottawa area..having mixed Canadian - Brasilian parentage in one case.

There has been a bit of movement of brasilian coaches to the Ottawa area .. for training purposes with St. Anthony ..i thought but i may be wrong in the details.

Of course a lot of other Canadians could be playing in brasil ..in the lower leagues if our CSA had a clue about how to get them try outs especial at the over 18 under 20 age in the smaller professional clubs in Para and Northeast States. Many of our players would stack up well in such U20 teams just below the weekly selections.

Living costs as you know Oranje are relativily low with acceptable apartments available for under 250 dollars a month.

The process of checking the Nationality on the CBF system is time consuming because it has to be done individually. However, I did check players under amateur contracts at America(SP)because I doubt professional contracts would be offered so quickly to a young Canadian. And it would be unusual for players under the weekly selection to have a have a pro contract at the U-20 level. I seem to remember someone who was at America(SP) a couple years back but no luck.

If they are in the Northeast, I wouldn't know where to start. However, I will continue to check.

On getting training with clubs, I agree that it would not be too difficult. Toss a few bucks at some of the small clubs in the interior of Sao Paulo state and they would gladly incorporate a training program. The level of play is very high. Traffic Group does just that and already is running some academies in the US through its Instituto Brasileiro de Futebol. The first link is of the Institute. The second is the website of the group. The third is the player development academy in Brasil called Desportivo Brasil (Check the pictures of the training centre at CT Sportville). The Traffic Group also have some interests in some Pro clubs including Miami FC.
