Gold Cup 2007: Do you remember who won?

Just that I've always been annoyed that we only see the Canada games on cable, not even the final, so when Canada goes out, it's like the competition's over.

That's kinda the problem with the Gold cup isn't it? If everyone completely ignores it when Canada is out ( and we are talking about the hardcore soccer fans here) then what does that say about the success and appeal of this event?

That would never happen with the Euro's, or any other major event.

For the record, I did see the final on TV. Caught it by accident while in a pub at the time. It was a very good game: great come back by the US along with a great setting, atmosphere and intensity/emotion in the match. But, Concacaf still has a lot of work to do ( Marketing-wise) to bring this event to the standards it deserves.

For starters they might try finding a decent name for the tournament. I would assume that the lack of television for the finals has to do with the ammount CONCACAF charges for the rights compared to the ammount of interest/viewers there would be if Canada is not playing. Nowadays anyone with Internet can get it through P2P so it is not like it is unavailable like it would have been a few years ago.

But what bugs me is that even Sportsnet, who carried the Canada matches, didn't bother with final. I doubt that they would charge additional rights fees for just showing the final, so why couldn't RSN at least pick up the feed? To promote soccer, promoting the event kind of goes part and parcel with promoting the national side and, by extension, the game.

Ignoring the final means that your ignoring the event. Which undermines the significance of Canada's matches in the event?

I suspect there is a fee for each game televised with the final being the most expensive.

That is strange actually. I wonder if Australia showed the rest of the Asian cup after they were knocked out? I think Gold Cup 2007 was better than the previous one in terms of presentation, but at the end of the day I'm probably just looking forward to the next Gold Cup because Canada did well.

Not having FSC (or GOL TV or whoever showed the entire tournament), I was stuck watching it through the prism of Sportsnet's "we'll show it two hours later" importance towards the GC. I only managed to watch one half live in the first round (on P2P)...

I've proposed this name on BigSoccer:

CONCACAF Cup of Nations (CCN)

Copa CONCACAF de Naciones (CCN)

Coupe CONCACAF des nations (CCN)

You could also switch it to (CNC), but to me it would ressemble the African Cup of Nations too much in name.

Really, "Gold Cup" should go the way of guest teams and "The Football Confederation" (PS: What was *that* about?).

I would get rid of CONCACAF from the name as well because noone outside hard core soccer fans knows what CONCACAF is. We need something short and catchy that makes it clear that it is the continental championship for North America.

Something short and catchy like "The Gold Cup"? Why do we hate this name again guys?

Because it has no meaning. When you hear the name, "Gold Cup" it could just as well refer to a midget hockey tournament as to the soccer championship of North America. When we won and I told people we won the Gold Cup they said, "What is that" or "Who cares." If I said we won the soccer championship of North America these same people were very impressed. I am sure the same thing happens when people look at the tv schedule and see Gold Cup and don't watch it because they don't know what it is.

To this day I also don't know where they came up with the name. It seems like it was chosen at random and is not the name of a donor, sponsor or former player.

I do remember the winner - the name for the actual trophy came from a closed door meeting of Jack Warner and his staff and was a the best the brilliant minds at CONCACAF could come up with after three days of deliberation - after all it sounds important and impressive so it must be.

Then of course they handed the contract for the actual design of the trophy to the same guy who designed the trophy for the '76 Canada Cup which unfortunately while definitely was a reflection of Canada was not indeed a "cup" - so of course in CONCACAF's case they ended up with a SILVER piece of metal that looked like a leftover prop from Tron and while cupish was definitely indeed not a cup and certainly dangerous to drink from with the Klingon weapon like handles... I did see the final on GolTV. Yes the Americans won and beat a

Mexican team who I thought would have lost to Canada as well.

Maybe it's an issue of TV rights to the game and RSN gets the

Canadian rights only. I thought the commentary to the GolTV

broadcast was, to be nice, uninspired.

As for a better name or a better trophy, the current one matches

the tackiness of the whole tournament filled with payola and

lack of class. Like a bumble-bee comedy in The Simpsons.
