The Halifax Daily News

Halifax's Matt Britner has been selected to attend the Adidas Major League Soccer player combine next month in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Britner, a defender with the Brown Bears of Providence, R.I., is among 54 seniors from 33 NCAA Division 1 schools invited to the Jan. 11-15 camp. Britner was named All-Ivy League player of the year last month.

MLS will hold its annual entry draft Jan. 18 in Baltimore.

Tremendious player. Was the NSSL MVP with Halifax King of Donair at 17 years old I think? Probably won't see a talent like that in Atlantic Canada again. He's the definition of a complete player, speed, smarts, and skill. I don't think he'll have any problem catching on with an MLS team.

I found an evaluation of Matt Britner's performance today at the 3rd day of MLS Combine camp from the 3rd degree website (written by Buzz Carick).

"Britner made a nice tackle at one point early in his day, but he also made a couple bad plays later on. One notably moment when Nimo got by him and he had to foul to stop the play. He’s just to inconsistent for me"

I've not been able to find much other mention of Matt from other bloggers at the combine.

Hopefully this doesn't hurt his liklihood of getting drafted.

Where will this guy be in 10 years. Do people think he'll be a national team standout a guy who was a good u-20 player, but couldn't cut it at the senior level?

He could turn out to be poster boy for the advantages of have viable options for professional career domestically. I guess Tyler Hemmings is the other.

Had he been coming out of college two years ago, what would his options have been? Europe maybe? well I never got a sence that they value players with US college backgrounds. Had he opted for MLS he might have counted as a non-domestic player.

By the way, did he play for our U20's? I dont recall of him on on teams in 2003 nor 2005

He was part of the 2005 team but a last minute injury had him forfeit the tourney.

I think it was because of his injury that we called back Uccello in 2005, call that Julian famously refused.

Britner is a good player he'll probably catch on with an MLS team. I think he'll be a depth player with the MNT in years to come, but I dunno if he will reach "starter" status on a continuous basis. Out of Edgar, De Jong, Hainault, Ramalho, Ledgerwood-- he is probably most similar to Edgar in style, although I think he's probably a bit quicker. That is based on what I seen of him in U17, I haven't seen him play recently.

Any idea where this guy will go in the MLS draft as in what round? and would TFC want to draft him?

He's probably an upgrade over a guy like Braz. He's more composed on the ball and can shoot better. Speaking of Braz, have TFC released him yet?

Scotia has a really good 17-year-old player this year.

I think Britner will develop into a better player than Braz with time. Braz, as a wingback (the only pos. i've seen him in), gives up posession too cheaply in my opinion. The few times i've played against Britner he's played in the center of the park, I dunno what he's like as a wingback. Britner is definatly a more composed player than Braz, but right now, Braz would be more valuable than Britner because of experience, not necasarily talent.

Britner will probably go late in the second round or early in the third round, and yes, TFC will likely grab him.
