Cyclops
Does anyone know anything about this player? Apparently, he was involved with the Barcelona youth system a few years back. Now he's plying his trade with Club America in Mexico and scoring. Why hasn't he been invited to any of the MNT training camps??
Massive Attack
Because he's Mexican? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santiago_Fern%C3%A1ndez
The Ref
Probably the CSA and coach don't even know about him unless somebody tells them. I think the problem we have, and this is an opinion, stems from the fact we don't have a national league. In other countries young lads make a name for themselves in their own country various league levels first. From there they may wake some interest from abroad and they move to bigger and better things. So their names are already noted in their own country as they progressed locally. Our kids leave Canada early in their teens and make a name for themselves elsewhere first. Therefore they never became a household name here and unless the CSA or somebody is keeping tabs on every single guy that goes to play abroad, we don't have an official record of names to pass on to coaches, etc.

Bertuzzi44
quote: Fernández was selected to represent his country at the 2005 Under-20 World Cup qualifying tournament, in which Mexico failed to advance to the main event, suffering two defeats and drawing once. Add to this the fact that he is 22 years old and as loyola said it's a moot point.
Massive Attack
I can't find anything on this kid linking him to Canada. The V's board usually has a good grasp on Canadians abroad and I don't ever remember a player eligible for Canada chosing Mexico. The funny thing is Canada was part of the reason that this kid didn't make it to the 2005 WYC in Holland. Santiago Fernandez played in the game that Canada defeated Mexico in qualifying. http://www.canadasoccer.com/eng/media/viewArtical.asp?Press_ID=2022
Grizzly
Doesn't have a very good strike rate either so at the moment wouldn't be much more than a depth player for us were he even elibigle.

Mr. Knowitall
Another thread about nothing. The jid has been capped numerous times for Mexico's U-21. He's now automatically declared for the country. He was also born in Mexico. He's as Canadian a Burrito. --And now you know

Mr. Knowitall
The only thing thats derogatory is the topic. The guy is Mexican and you want to make him Canadian. It was a type-o on my part. Followed by a pretty good joke. But the real joke is that somehow a few of you out there think this guy is going to play for Canada. Born: Mexico City, Mexico Clubs: Barcelona (Segunda B3), Club America Int'l caps: Mexico U-21 (3 caps, 1 goal) Yup, he's Canadian alright.
Alex
The thing is that internet forums are for discussion, otherwise they have no purpose, other than maybe advertising.
manutd1
Hey Mr.Knowitall, I've looked at a few threads that you have posted on, and all you seem to want to do is stop any discussion and diss people...it appears a little childish. Maybe you could just give your opinion and let the discussion continue on...I am interested in and respect other people's viewpoints. People come to this board, because they want to have discussions, not end them.

People come to this board, because they want to have discussions, not end them. He has trouble typing with one hand, the other made useless by that plum on his thumb. I realize now that I have seen this guy play. I saw a summer tournament up near where my wife is from, in a town called Tona that has a beautiful pitch, and he had just been signed to the 2nd team. Barça B played Gava, I recall seeing Jorquera, then Barça second keeper, with his arm in a cast, he'd be injured late in the previous season. So I think this is the summer of 2004, August. Or maybe it was 2003, not sure. I think S F was being used as a target-type striker, as much as a Mexican can work that way, and the coach, then Pere Gratacós, was correcting him constantly. Another striker on that team was Cristian, who scored for Depor vs. Barça two days ago. I thought that SF had a decent year here, and wish I'd known he had lived on the North Shore, as I'd have said hello.
Mr. Knowitall
Hey Man Utd guy. Let me start by saying I have never called anyone out in my postings without being called out first. Glad you have the time on your hands to look at all of my previous posts. I think I've helped to generate discussion whether you agree with my posts are not. Maybe you should try it too, although my profile is pretty impressive. I dont mean to end discussions. But sometimes knowing it all will do that. --And now you know. jpg75
I asked the Mexicans at BigSoccer about this guy a couple of years ago. He had already been capped by Mexico at the Toulon U21 tourny in France.
