Danny Dichio for Canada???

Recommended Posts

Some guys at the U-Sector forum are suggesting that Dichio told them (or hinted to them)last week at a TFC pub crawl that efforts to rush his Canadian citizenship application were underway. Partly to give him domestic status for TFC, but it was inferred that it was someone in the CSA that was trying to hurry the application along.

I can think of only one reason why the CSA would be interested in helping DD become a Canuck. And, it has nothing to do with MLS domestic rules.

According to wikipedia (not that it's always correct), he was capped once at the U21 level for England. If this is true, wouldn't he be ineligible to play for us? Was he capped?

It depends if it was an 'official' game.

But I'm pretty sure FIFA now has a residency requirement for changing citizenship. They introduced this to stop Qatar from loading up on Brazilians. I'm sure this wouldn't allow Dichio to suit up for Canada right away.

With all due respect to Danny who I think is a fantastic person and who would be a great Canadian, he's well down the depth chart behind Friend, Occean, and probably Gerba. I hope the CSA isn't wasting resources that could be directed toward sorting out Tam's situation or bringing Jonathan into the fold. Interesting nonetheless. I do hope he gets involved in coaching in this country as he seems to have the mentality for it and, hey, for those of you in anti-Mitchell camp, has the requisite charisma for sure.

If memory serves, you become locked in when you play for the full senior side.

Dichio would apply.

Dichio's better than Hargreaves

Dichio's better than Hargreaves

Dichio's better than Hargreaves

And Owen cannot deny!

It would be great if TFC can attract foreign talent in the future to become Canadian Citizens. It wouldn't be the first time, Carl Valentine for example if I recall correctly.

Dichio would be down the chart for sure. The sad thing is that he is probably the most marketable player in Canada at the current time.

You must have been officially resident in Canada for at least 1095 days (3 years) to be eligible for Canadian citizenship. I don't see how Dichio could get his citizenship faster than that. He will also be 36 by the time South Africa 2010 takes place... and he would effectively be a rookie at the senior International level (particularly when it comes to playing in CONCACAF). So I think if the CSA is trying to help fast-track Dichio it is more likely for the direct benefit of TFC and their roster quotas than for our MNT.

Depth chart aside how do you think CONCACAF defenders would handle Dichio? People seem to hate playing against him, might be good for some decisions going our way.

Flop, flop ... yellow card, red card. Most CONCACAF defenders

would probably flop at an incidental contact in the box (eg.

WCQ against Honduras). That's the problem with a very physical

target man. Would be great in a match against Northern Ireland

or Scotland though.

Like the guy, but I'm not sure this fast-track thing is to

benefit Canada rather than TFC.

Well, the Honduran Diving Team would try that for sure. Still, I think Dichio, as an old pro, would be able to adapt, like he adapted to MLS officiating. Danny knows when to go to ground himself, at incidental contact. If he draws a PK for it once in a while, I can live with the odd expulsion. Sometimes I think Canadian players are a bit too naive when it comes to this sort of thing.

I don't see how Dichio could be fast tracked through to citizenship. Although I suspect he should have or should be close to having permanent residence approval by now.

Having said that, I don't see him playing for Canada because he is already 33 years of age. Three years from now is 2010 and he would be 36. He may have his Canadian citizenship by WC 2010 but I doubt that he would have gotten any better than he is today.

At the same time, that also means that his fit in CONCACAF is not relevant.

Carl Valentine was a pretty good score for us. No pun intended. It goes to show that TFC could contribute to everybody's success by going down to South America and signing a bunch of wonderkids. If they loan them out to Whitecaps and the Impact, I don't think their contracts count against the salary cap or the 28 player roster. 1095 days isn't too long too wait if the player in question is a teenager. And the odds of him being called for Brasil or Argentina must be diminished by the fact he's in Canada.

The standard residency requirement for Canadian citizenship is three years. I'd be surprised and not a little disappointed if Dicchio, a 33 year old second or third level by world standards professional footballer, is fast tracked frankly. On what grounds?

PR

Or maybe Mo has actually convinced people at the CSA that Canada lacks quality players.
