Simoes agrees to three year contract with the JFF

Tuesday, 04 December 2007

Rene Simoes has agreed to a 3 year US$600,000 per year contract with the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF).

His salary is the same as when he left the national programme 7 years ago.

It is $400,000 less than what previous coach Bora Milutinovic received.

His Assistant Coach Glydistan Ananias, Trainer, Alfredo Monteso and Goal Keeper Coach Chico Santos, will receive US$15,000 per month.

Theodore Whitmore will also be an Assistant Coach, but his finacial details are not yet finalized.

Simoes will be the coach of all males and female national teams.

The JFF will be responsible for the transportation and housing for Simoes and his staff.

The Brazilian will also be responsible for the selection of all local coaches for national programmes subject to the board's approval.

Simoes will also be responsible for the selection of all players for national programmes.

So, if he insists on his three guys coming along for the ride the total package is 1.14 million...yikes. What would that have been as a portion of our total MNT budget? To beat a dead horse.

And, remember, this is in US dollars. Perhaps not a concern today but it was a concern earlier this year when the exchange rate was quite different!

Remember though that he is going to be the Head Coach for ALL their national teams... men, women, Olympic team, U20's, U17s etc. You would have to add up all the coaching staff salaries of our National Program to make a proper comparison. I don't know if our staff salaries are in the public domain to make that comparison though.

That does seem very expensive, especially as all of the assisstants are getting substantial salaries probably well in excess of their market worth (and much more than I expected when I was supporting Simoes' hiring). I doubt Mitchell is making that much more than Simoes' assistants. If these figures are similar to what he was demanding from Canada I am starting to understand the board not approving it. I don't have a problem with paying Simoes $600 000 (and apparently he was offered the job without assistents but turned it down) which is probably fair market value but another $600 000 for four assistant coaches? I am not in favour of skimping on coaching but if we can afford to pay $1.32 million I think we could get a coach with a much more impressive CV than Simoes.

Our other positions are not full time they are, I believe, currently being paid an honoria from the U23s down so I don't think that would make up for a lot.

Wow. We made the right choice in turning down Simoes if that was what it was going to cost to bring him and his 3 coaches with him.

US$600K for Simoes is maybe worth it, but at $180K for each of his boys is ridiculous. Christ, we could get a world class American trainer for $180K that would have them as fit as Olympic track athletes!

Lets recall though that he was willing to negotiate the inclusion of his assistants. However, let me ask this, if Jamaica, who are struggling right now, turn it around and qualify for the World Cup, while Canada falls by the wayside, will that $1.2 millions price tag still seem excessive?

And no, I am not saying that this will happen. Simply asking the question...

Let me ask you this, could we turn around right now and make better use of that $1.14M? Yes.

Will we? No. [V]

I don't know...give me some idea's. $1 million would buy a friendly against Brazil. It might buy 3 or 4 home friendlies against Central American or Carribean opposition. I see Simoes has having been more of an infrastructure investment than an operating investment. He offered some real good thoughts on revamping the game in this country I thought. Had the CSA gone along with that, a big "if" I know, then I struggle to find a better way to spend that cash. For me, the real cost of losing Simoes, is not so much 2010, as it is the decades that follow.

Does this person work for Balco? :D

Isn't Simoes' salary being paid for by someone in the Private sector in Jamaica?

The Men's team needs a sugar daddy (Or momma).

Well, i'm thinking we should bring in some top notch support people. Like i said, we could get an elite track trainer from the US to help push the guys further, - look what it did for Donovan Bailey and Bruny Surin - this is what the US is doing to an extent. Their infamous beep test pushes them to the limit, sort of like the VO2 test...obviously we'd need a camp of some sort to take full advantage of this, so maybe get the guys together for a few weeks in July to keep their fitness up and play a friendly or two. Also, bring in a sports psychologist and have them around for the SVG and SF round games at minimum.

1- Trainer (150K) & Psychologist (50K)

2- Home friendly versus T&T in early June (200K).

3- 3 week camp in July with a home friendly against Iceland (we have to play them anyways) (700K)
