ZURICH, Switzerland (AP) -- England's failure to qualify for the Euro 2008 championship will likely cost the team a seeding in Sunday's preliminary draw for the 2010 World Cup.

England dropped one spot to 12th in the FIFA world rankings issued Friday, leaving the team 10th out of the European teams who are ranked behind No. 1 Argentina and No. 2 Brazil.

European teams will be drawn into nine qualifying groups in Durban, South Africa. Since FIFA uses the rankings to decide the seedings, England would miss out.

The nine seeded teams are expected to be Italy, Spain, Germany, Czech Republic, France, Portugal, the Netherlands, Croatia and Greece. Those countries are ranked between No. 3 and No. 11 on the FIFA list.

Canada slipped four spots to No. 55 following a 2-0 loss to South Africa earlier this week.

Argentina remained No. 1 in the rankings despite its surprise World Cup qualifying loss to Colombia, while Brazil and Italy made up ground.

After Argentina lost 2-1 on Tuesday, Brazil beat Uruguay by the same score a day later. Italy finished top of its qualifying group for the 2008 European Championship after victories over Scotland and the Faeroe Islands..

Argentina has 1,523 points, followed by Brazil with 1,502 and Italy with 1,498.

Spain moved up two spots to fourth after qualifying for Euro 2008, while France dropped three places to seventh. The Czech Republic, which finished above Germany in its Euro 2008 group, moved up three places to sixth.

The Netherlands' slide continued, with Marco van Basten's team slipping two spots for the second month in a row to ninth.

The biggest movers in the rankings -- announced two days before the qualifying draw for the 2010 World Cup in Durban, South Africa -- were defending European champion Greece, which moved up three spots to 11th, Turkey (28th to 16th), Colombia (25th to 17th) and Bulgaria (34th to 18th).

UEFA aren't as corrupt as CONCACAF, so they are probably using the most updated ranking.

How convenient that the new seeding method prevents T&T from drawing Honduras in the semi-final groupings. Honduras is by far the scariest of any of the 3 Pot B teams. We now have a 1/3 chance of getting Honduras as a Pot B team as opposed to a 20% chance if they were in Pot C. If the format had been Pot A US, MEX, CR and Pot B being the 4-6 spots from last WC: GUA, PAN, T&T. That would have had CAN, JAM and HON in Pot C.

If I'm reading this correctly, there is a possibility of a group consisting of:

Croatia (Pot 1)

Serbia (Pot 3)

Bosnia-Herzegovina (Pot 4)

Slovenia or Albania (Pot 5)

Montenegro (Pot 6)

Throw in Turkey from Pot 2 and watch the sparks fly.

Unless Croatia draws the five-team group, it could potentially happen unless UEFA have plans to keep these countries apart that I'm not aware of.

I have no idea why this interests me, as I have no ties to the region at all, but could you imagine the tension at such matches.
