HELLLL NO..!!! Keep off our Guzzie. Definately not for 8 mil , I expect at least 12. About the Kalou case. Kalou failed his Dutch exam and therefore he couldnt get a Dutch passport. After he failed the test his case was being handled as a special one as we didnt have a lot of right wingers. The special case also applies to Badminton players , marathon runners or other special people who can add something to The Netherlands etc... Kalou was eventually denied that as our immigration minister thought there more than enough talent in Holland and also because Sala would just take advantage of it and immediately move to a foreign club. Sala was then told to wait for another two years (He was in Holland for 3 years) like any normal citizen who can get a Dutch passport after 5 years. He decided not to and he now plays with his brother for the Ivory Coast. Jono has been here now for 7/8 years and he could have picked up his Dutch passport already a long time ago. Maybe he got his passport already...who knows..?? A transfer to Chelski wouldnt make a difference in his naturalisation process. He has already qualified. An Observer
Not sure that Chelsea is the best destination for him. They already have Lampard, Ballack, Mikel, Essien, Makele, in the midfield. Of course, it would be a huge move for him. Also, I think it would help break the link with Holland and also prove that he doesn't need to play for them to increase his market value. For these reasons, it would make his chances of choosing Canada more likely.
Loud Mouth Soup
Agreed he'd get lost at Chelsea. And don't forget they also have Sidwell who they just signed. I sense a Stalteri-like career nosedive if he went there.
Toronto MB
Wow. Wasn't expecting this. There are positive and negatives to this possible transfer. Positives being: - It gets him out of Holland which in itself could be enough to sway his emotions over to Canada. I also assume it would nullify his citizenship and ability to play for Holland. - Having a Canadian player sign with Chelsea would do a lot to grow the credibility and profile of the sport in the mainstream in our media. Something that is much needed in the run-up to WCQ with the quality of our squad. - There is a chance he could emerge as our biggest star ever in terms of profile and calibre if he is able to rise to the top at Chelsea. The negative being that he definitely runs the risk of getting lost in the mix. It would be a gamble for him at this point. Will be interesting to see if this story develops. ag futbol
Personally I’d love to see him play in La Liga like his brother, although it would be neat to see him on TV every week with Chelski. 8 mil does seem a little low for a prospect of his quality. trueviking
oh man, imagine having OH at ManU and JDG2 at chelsea, with both of them playing internationally with other contries?...yeesh. "Julian plumped for Canada"....british people talk funny.
VPjr
I agree with ag futbol....someone in La Liga should get involved if there is a chance he will be sold. La Liga has done wonders for Julian. Imagine how much better JDG2 might be if he got a chance to play every week for a mid table or higher La Liga side. I'd hate to see him playing for Chelski. I can't support them, with or without JDG2. I'm not convinced it matters where Jono plays professionally as a factor in determining whether he chooses Holland or Canada. I'd like to remain optimistic but based on a conversation I had recently with members of this summer's U20 squad, I'm not ready to put money on ever seeing Jon alongside Julian, wearing Canada's colours. Of course, the people I talked to were just friends / childhood teammates. It did not come directly from the horse's mouth but what I was told was a bit disheartening, if true and these guys claim to be in contact with him regularly. Time will tell I suppose. So if JDG2 was Grants first signing I guarantee he would get some playing time. Then with his immense skill I'm sure he could turn some heads and become a regular fixture. I think it would be a good move. Also, Kalou's move to Chelsea seemingly worked out fine.
Guest Jeffery S.
I a bit surprised what with talk here at Barça of getting Cesc back (highly unlikely, and pricey) and Deco being injured (and being a constant source of transfer rumours), Xavi good but getting a bit older, they are not onto him already. And with all the Dutch connections. Maybe they think he is a bit too much of an artist? Is Jono a hard-working defender, does he get his leg into a tackle now and then? Asking as I only see highlight reels of hot plays, never the dirty work.
divingisgay
Chelsea is obviously thinking in the long-term.. Ballack and Lampard, unfortunately, look like are going to be sold in the July-August transfer window. Claude Makelele is probably leaving soon, since he's only going to be playing in the Carling Cup and only stayed with Chelsea, because Jose told him that he was only going to play in important games...so...he probably gone too. Guest Dave
If JDG2 is being courted by Chelsea it may be in his best interest to commit to Canada right away. He will need a British work permit most likely. A quick way to achieve this is to have played 75% of his national team's game over the past 2 years. Canada is ranked 52nd by FIFA so that bit is OK. If it can be demonstrated that the 75%-of-games bit could be achieved pretty quickly, that might well be enough to get Jono a temporary work permit in time for the January transfer window. To make this happen, obviously Dale Mitchell has to be onside. Here's how I think it could work (I posted part of this at the RPB board too). Canada has played 9 games in 2007 so far. Let's say Jono starts showing up to every game, starting with South Africa. If Canada plays a couple of Caribbean minnows during their upcoming January training camp, and then 3 more preparatory friendlies on FIFA dates (perhaps 2 of them in Europe) prior to WCQ beginning in the Summer, then two in Rd 1, and 6 in Rd. 2 of WCQ next year, plus one more friendly in Europe on Nov 2008 FIFA date, that's 15 games Jono could play in the next 12 months, with relatively few trips across the Atlantic. The Hex would then start in January 2009, and shortly thereafter some of Canada's 2007 games would start to "expire" from the two year list. So it is possible for a player of JDG2's stature to achieve the 75% standard in a little over a year. BOTTOM LINE: If such a scenario were to be presented to British labour immigration officials, with the support of Dale Mitchell and Chelsea brass, it seems likely that this would be enough to sway the authorities to grant Jono a termporary work permit right away. Moral of the story - playing for Canada can help one's career.
Daniel
I think "exceptional talents" get exempted from this, and he might qualify.

I suspect Chelsea would find a way to get him a work permit. It will break my damn heart to see another Canadian break into one of the world's elite teams, only to turn his back on the country for greener pastures. And, he will. For a pathetic, petty reason. I'm sure JDG2 can have a nice little international career for Holland. He'll play in a couple world cups and Euros, maybe even going deep in one of them. Or, he could literally change the fortunes of this country, becoming an absolute legend. He won't win a World Cup with Canada, but he likely won't for Holland either. It doesn't seem like a tough choice to me. Sadly, it does seem difficult to too many Canadians.
jpg75
Duane, you forgot to mention the opportunity to play with his bros. As for WP issues, i think the 8M GBP price tag confirms his "exceptional talent" status as Daniel mentioned.

Only one Dutchman will ever by Johann Cruyff. Even Zidane doesn't escape the Shadow of Platini. JdG2 gets to choose whether he is going to be the Gold Standard by which all future footballers in Canada aer judged or be another link in a chain for Holland. I guess we gotta hope he has an Ego.
