Friends of Soccer has a New Poster

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Most of you who've been following us are probably familiar with our "Build the Stadium Now!" banner. Our mighty flag has well over 10,000 signatures on it, and I think it might be completely black with names after Wednesday's game...(by the way, visit our booth at BC Place during the game...we've taken a table behind Section 19).

While I can't afford to make another banner, I'm happy to say that I've also made some posters for Wednesday. We'll have a couple of hundred at the table, so pick one up if you like. We're also going to try to get these into every stadium-friendly establishment in Metro Vancouver.

Thanks,

Bill Currie

While, I heartily support the effort to get the stadium built downtown and applaud the hard work of people like yourself, this poster has a major flaw in the sense that it looks like the fans you hope to fill the stadium will all be white adults. A little more diversity in at least the physical appearance of this "fantasy" crowd might have made this project look more like a real community effort, with community meaning the real people who live downtown. Some visibile minorities would have done the trick. This looks more like how the stadium might look in a place like Mission. Yes, I realize that this is almost eaxctly how the crowd looks on any given night in Swangard, but one dreams of a more diverse fan base if the team ever gets into Vancouver proper.

Minor point, but it literally jumped right out at me the first time i saw it.

I don't think you can see any more than 12 bits of skin on face in a stadium with 16,000 in it. And they are all in the cheap seats. Maybe that is the white trash section.

In any case, I think the rendering is not Bill's, it comes from the Whitecaps if I am not mistaken.

It is indeed an architect's rendering and not my own...but it's a valid point. For what it's worth, one of the major points of the Friends of Soccer Campaign has been that Vancouver needs to start building institutions that are welcoming to people of all cultures and nationalities. I'd also say that the crowds at Swangard are very diverse in the past few years, especially when compared with other pro sports in the city.

Cheers,

Bill

Ok lets get anal about something in this picture that matters.....

Why are the Caps playing WITHOUT a goalie?

What the hell formation/game are those two teams even playing?

Where are the corner flags?

Why have the Lions eroded into Flattop, and where are they going to do the half-pipe snowboard for the Olympics now that Grouse Mountain has been wiped out?

And the worst of all: how can it be a sunny day in Vancouver with the wind blowing so strongly from the north-east, as seen by the flags? That would be rain for sure!

As for the question about why there is only ONE southsider holding up a scarf, the answer is obvious. Anyone?

Polish Lynx Fan was the guy in charge of getting the scarves manufactured!

I just assumed the other three were still stuck in the beer line-up.

The artificial lighting is so powerful that even in broad daylight four shadows are cast by every player. Which would also mean that the corner lights are especially powerful.

At first I thought the players were cross country skiing, then I understood it right.

The guy in the lower left wearing the scarf has headphones on. What is he listening to? Anyone?

Classic!

The guy wearing the headphones is Terry David Mulligan. He's not listening to anything. Just like when he was the Whitecaps special guest a couple of years ago to sing "White is the Colour" at halftime he has them on so he can pretend he can't hear anyone trying to talk to him.

Looks to me that the distance between the fans and the net is big enough to hold and endzone and an upright![:0]

Let the conspiracy theories begin... mwhaahhahahahahaa

The URL did cover the artists name, but given the knob gobbler didn't even look at a single reference picture for what a soccer gamer might actually look like I don't care much.
