JamesW
Is there anyone out there willing to put in the time to send out cards to all our lads in the name of the Voyageurs? I'm more then willing to chip in $20 or so if there is someone willing to put in the time. I think this is really important.
N-A
I was only thinking about that the other day. The can't recall last time the voyageurs sent out cards and how the people invloved went about it. Do we have our own card design that we send out each time we do this. It would be good if someone could design a card on a program and send it out email to to voyageurs in certain areas (Vancouver, Toronto, Holland, Germany, UK and they could then print out on card and send on to the players. Might help on the mail cost factor. If this idea is welcome. I'd be happy to post within the UK.
Saviola7
Great idea. I'd be willing to do some of the work for those playing in Europe. If somebody can whip something up, we can print it off on cardstock and your ready to go.
Cheeta
Don't think anyone's taken on this project since Mimglow went into exile. Is a bit of work but I'm not sure how much to be honest. As usual I am willing to do my part but have had precious little time the ENTIRE year so far and doubt I'll have enough to spare for anything other than the few projects I'm trying to keep on the go as it is, so no time-sensitive tasks for me right now. Good idea to raise the question and gauge the interest. If you don't ask how will you know?
JamesW
This was last done in 2003 by Mimglow (Link). All he did was (as far as I can tell) buy cards from some store and drop them off at the CSA. We should definetly try and send them to the club or player, not through the CSA. I also agree that it needs to be a Vee's card, not something bought from the store. Might cost more but would be well worth it. Perhaps it is time for another design contest? The last one was a great success and I think this might me the best way to get a card design. Once we get that we can take our next step from their. Perhaps we should also send some cards to the CSA? quote:You better watch out You better not steal You better not hide I'm telling you why _______ is coming to town _______ is coming to town _______ is coming to town I can't think of anything to replace "Santa Claus," I'm sure someone else can. That might be a good card, no?
N-A
I'm more then happy sending printing the cards for the UK. I'm no good at designing though. As for the CSA card thats funny but would anyone dare send it to them!
hamiltonfan
I'll send them out to all the players playing in the USA..it is pretty early but i guess it better to be ready intime for when late december rolls around. we gotta get a list of players, decide what to that card should say, then get them made. River City
Great idea. Especially on the Voyageur specific card. Are we using the Mother of All Canadians Abroad? If so, volunteers could take on specific countries just like N-A and hamiltonfan. I'll help.
N-A
Didn't think about using the Mother of all Canadians abroad River City good idea. I think the cards should go to the players mens and womens, coaches (staff, maybe the Provincial Associations) just an idea. I'm sure it would be all good to promote the voyageurs name. Over the next few days I'll try to do a list of players and then add anyone missed. We could end up with a long list though.
N-A
I've made a list of some 160 players which is alot. The list may need to be cut down to size. I am not sure how many cards would be possible to send out. If any of you guys who are interested in the sending of the cards and like to see the list email me and I'll send it over and then a decision can be made to who to send cards to. I think it may be worth sending the players who have played an international and to a few selected others to bring the list down. Just need to work on a design of a card next. If anyone is up for that it would be cool.
River City
I could do Mexico (2), Colombia (1), Peru (1), Uruguay (1), Chile (1), Argentina (1) and Portugal (4) for a total of 11 players. Depending on how many players are left out, I can probably do more.
N-A
Cheers River City thats a good start. Does anyone know where you can find who has played in Canada Internationals this year. I've tried the CSA site and can not find it. Also I can do the 23 UK players. Thats 34 of 160 players.
Cheeta
I'm going to sticky this topic for a month or so as there seems to be enough of an interest in making this happen this year. Just one suggestion. For those players who're attached to clubs I'd recommend just posting the seasons greetings to the club c/o player X. I think most clubs addresses are readily available on the internet. And just to make things more complicated I don't believe the ladies have even been part of the Voyageur Xmas card scheme. Has any thought been given to added the fairer sex to the program?
River City
N-A, don't forget hamiltonfan's 12 US based players. Cheeta, is there a list for the Women anywhere? For the card, I'm guessing we're avoiding mention of Christmas, Kwanza and Festivus and sticking to a generic 'Wishing you and all your loved ones the very best in this Holiday season'? I do think we should add a Voyageur specific ending though. Ideas? - See you in South Africa in 2010 - The Voyageurs - Drinking from Coast to Coast to Coast since 1996
N-A
Right including the USA 12 thats 46 players. I have included the Women's World Cup squad in the 160. The problem is I'm not sure where all the Womens team are currently at. If any one could help with that. Karina LeBlanc Kristina Kiss Melanie Booth Robyn Gayle Andrea Neil Tanya Dennis Rhian Wilkinson Diana Matheson Candace Chapman Martina Franko Randee Hermus Christine Sinclair Amy Walsh Melissa Tancredi Kara Lang Katie Thorlakson Brittany Timko Erin McCleod Sophie Schmidt Taryn Swiatek Jodi-Ann Robinson and are they in touch with the clubs during the off season. Saviola7
I'll take Germany, Belgium, and Holland to start (34). If nobody steps up I'll take some more (or I can trade if somebody wants one of them). We really need a design to get this off the ground though. I'd like to see some submissions ... JamesW
That is one huge list, I assume we will be trimming it down? I don't think we should send cards to Toronto FC players that are not Canadian. I also don't think club coaches (and certainly not Frank Yallop) should be getting cards. If no one else takes a go at a design I will do so sometime this week. I'm awful at it, but someone needs to get the ball rolling on a design. JamesW
OK, I've fooled around with Microsoft Office Publisher and have one card that looks like crap but I could make much nicer if you think it has potential. Here's the front and inside (large pictures): http://www.maj.com/gallery/jamit/Voyageurs/front.jpg http://www.maj.com/gallery/jamit/Voyageurs/page_2.jpg Now this would be a "top-fold-card." Let me know if there is any hope for something like this and what I should do to make it better, and we might just have something, maybe. Edit: I've changed them a little so they look better, and the pictures aren't so large.
N-A
Good card design Jamit. I was thinking maybe we should put the web address somewhere on the card. Just an idea.
Martyr
How's the cost going to be met? Are you taking donations? Where do we send our money? I know you've already have a volunteer to coordinate the cards for the England players... but I also live in London and I'd be happy to help in whatever way I can. Saviola7
Great design, I'm not sure if I like the car or not. Also, it'd be nice if you could have a group of players celebrating after a goal (ie, De Guzman, Hutch), but maybe just Hume is better since you might not be able to resolve it otherwise. I agree that the url should be put somewhere (maybe on the back). In the end we'll have to assemble a list of willing volunteers/donors. It may just work out that the costs are split evenly among the volunteers anyway. Otherwise we'll tally the costs and split them accordingly I guess. Martyr
Are there any photos available of a group of Voyageurs at a match? That seems like a better picture than having to choose one of the players to put on the card. We don't want to infringe on any of their 'image rights'. Also I'm not sure about sending it to the TFC players - especially the non-Canadians. That seems like something for the Red-Patch Boys or the Toronto Ultras to organize. If we include them then to be fair we should at least include everybody on the Whitecaps and Impact as well. I think the line should be drawn at all Canadians playing abroad and those at home with at least one Canadian National Team cap.
