Crazy_Yank
Maurice Edu played his first international for the US today (against the Swiss) and played very well. He calmly held the ball under pressure and snuffed out numerous Swiss attacks. He added to the offense as well, nearly scoring 90 seconds into the match, and stealing the ball and making the pass that lead to the game winning assist. A secondary assist if you will Toronto truly has a gem on their hands. Edu will be on the olympic team and has a good shot at 2010.
VPjr
Way to go Mo. He's going to be a special player. He will render Carl Robinson unnecessary for 2008 IMO
SCF08
I've always wondered about transfers in MLS. Isnt it right that MLS controls players and needs to give players permission to move to a foreign club..?? And how does it work for the selling club...?? Can they set the asking price or does MLS do that..? And do Toronto get 100% of the fee if he's sold..?
AvroArrow
I think the club gets a percentage of the transfer fee, but MLS technically owns the players. The problem is that if Edu continues to improve, some European team will snap him up, leaving TFC with another gaping roster hole

But on the other hand Mo Johnston gets all these mids and every one is defensive, not one offensive playmaker (except maybe Cancela who was gone quickly). Everyone else who has played central was defensive.

MLS owns the rights to the player and will negotiate the transfer agreement. 2/3 of the transfer fee will be held by MLS for the club to spend on future player transfers. However, this fund is seperate from the "allocation" money that can also be spent on player salaries to circumvent the salary cap.

The salary cap is a huge constraint on team-building. We saw the team blow up with a few key injuries this season, indicating that the team may be built a little too "top-heavy", a risky structure. I hate to say it, but if I were management, I'd be trying to nickel & dime a handful of the players who I felt were under-performing relative to their salaries, trying to shave a few dollars off here & there to free up a little more room. I'd also be lobbying the league to raise the salary cap because it is just too low, and if it stays at this level it will really impair the growth of the league.
