Result of the Sunday October 14, 2007 CSL game between Serbian White Eagles and Windsor Border Stars played at Esther Shiner Stadium in North York at 7:00pm.

This was a Quarter Final playoff game between the #1 seeded team White Eagles and the #8 seed Border Stars.

25 min…White Eagles Nikola Budalic GOAL…SWE Gabriel Pop at 45 yards on left crosses to charging Budalic who boots low 20 yard shot into low left corner of net beyond diving goalie Anthony Santilli.

54 min…Border Stars Aaron Byrd GOAL…WBS Scott Patriquin rush on left and he crosses into box where WBS Radek Papiez flicks header around leaping goalie Djordje Radan and ball drops to right where charging Byrd blasts 3 yard shot into open net.

63 min…White Eagles Zoran Kokot GOAL…Kokot beats offside trap and in from 30 yards chips 25 yard shot over goalie into center of net.

Final Score:……..Serbian White Eagles……2……….Windsor Border Stars……..1……..

Attendance was about 250 on this cool night. This game was played at Esther Shiner Stadium which is the home of North York Astros because Centennial Stadium is not available this late in the season. The Astros were actually out of town playing their Quarter Final game against Toronto Croatia at the Hershey Centre because they were seeded lower than Croatia. All the remaining playoff games will be hosted at Esther Shiner Stadium which probably sounded good at the beginning of the year but with one week between the Semi-Finals and the Final, this won’t be too popular with ‘home’ team St Catharines Wolves who beat Canadian Lions by penalty kicks after overtime.

This game was exciting and could possibly have gone to overtime. Referee David Barry awarded Border Stars a freekick at 88 minutes inside the White Eagles box after goalie Djordje Radan had repeatedly been warned about time wasting. WBS Radek Papiez touched the 12 yard freekick and Aaron Byrd bends the 12 yard shot wide right. Three minutes later Byrd popped an 8 yard header over the goalie just wide right of the post. Two minutes later the SWE goalie out jumped WBS Ryan “Jamaica” Montegue for a popped up ball.

The White Eagles could have made it easier on themselves by scoring on more of their chances. Sasa Viciknez had a great 75 minute freekick from the right that the goalie had to fly over to the post to push the ball wide right. The goalie caught SWE Milos Scepanovic’s 20 yard shot with a crowd of players in the box. SWE Dragorad Miracevic tested him with a 30 yard blast through a crowd of players that he was able to catch. He caught another cross from the left end line sent in by Scepanovic’s at 81 minutes.

Earlier than that, White Eagles could have put it away at 49 minutes when Nikola Budalic beat a fallen defender and blasted an 18 yard shot from the left that hit the left goalpost and deflected wide.

The White Eagles coach looked like a genius when he replaced Alex Braletic with Zoran Kokot at 62 minutes and after WBS David Dwaihy intercepted a defender and sent a 15 yard shot from right just over the bar. The White Eagles goal kick soon resulted in Kokot scoring only one minute after coming on.

I had planned to go to the more evenly seeded Croatia vs. Astros game in Mississauga because I expected this game would be something like watching these teams a week and a half ago with White Eagles winning 3-0. Windsor brought only one sub much like other times they’ve come to Toronto. I chose this game because it’s only a 10 minute drive from home and my mother is very sick.
