O boy I love Bob for getting straight to the point at the end of the interview... "The CSA needs to be blown up!" You could feel Victor Montagliani squirm and say "I hope you don't mean that"... Bob's response... "oh yes I do"

SACK THE CSA!!!!!

well, just listened to Victor's interview. I think he took a swipe near the end at TFC, Whitecaps and Impact when he said "there is a lack of trust from top to bottom...you have professional entities thinking they can do a better job". I assume he means that the pro teams have lost faith in the CSA's ability to develop good players and he doesn't like that they are going to work together, outside of the CSA.

Other than that, Vic said alot of things that amount to not a whole lot. I find it interesting that he is on one hand happy he's happy that people are pissed off but on the other hand he doesn't seem happy to be the one dealing with the furor. I also found it interesting that he says they will have a president and "Chief staff officer" (strange description for the CEO) and TD by year's end. We'll be watching with interest.

That was a curious statement. I can certainly see how someone could take what he said as a knock on the Whitecaps, TFC and the Impact. However, there seems to be a lot of cooperation right now between the CSA and those professional clubs. After all the Whitecaps are looking to build a National Training Centre for them. How could you not be happy with that?

It is possible he was talking about the many 'for profit' soccer schools/academies that are unaffiliated with the CSA or Provincial Associations. I know that has been an issue in BC in the past - with some youth and women's National or Provincial team players preferring to train with their soccer schools rather than attend training at the Regional NTCs. But that is really just a very speculative guess.

I met Victor through the Vancouver Metro League a few years ago and he always struck me as being someone that strongly supported the role of professional clubs in youth development ie the European model. After all, he ran a team called AC Milan.

I was impressed by his statement about the CSA needing to get away from trying to be all things to all people. His idea that the 'sharp end' of the organization should be 'the player' is something I'd also like to hear more about.

Well that's clearly ironic, because a couple of weeks ago the CSA "wasn't in the players development business". I think this type of thing is getting at exactly what we need in this country. Clubs that develop players get the reputation and attract more talent, while those that don't are left out. People don't trust the CSA to develop talent through their provincial system so they are looking elsewhere, and rightfully so.
