Andrew W
Well, all's well that ends well ... I guess. I'd post the score but there isn't an ® in the thread title. Just checked the box score and Boyens was shown the red for "serious foul play". If that was serious foul play then Ricardo Clark should be suspended for 37 years. The ESPN announcers were, in a word, horrible. They struggled to pronounce names correctly amongst some comments I felt mocked some of the TFC players. Worst officiated game I think I've seen. Richard
I don't think the officiating was all that bad but the ESPN commentators were dreadful, appallingly ignorant. ESPN could do with a few good British commentators, but then they'd probably irritate the hell out of the Americans.
Soju
I think it's time for some of us to go into broadcasting.
Cheeta
Sub'ing Braz out in the 2nd could quite possibly have been the best move I've seen Mo make from the bench this year. Of course, my cat knew that sub needed to be made but whatever. Hate ESPN commentary but to be honest it's usually a little more objective. Wasn't their best night. Think they were ticked off by the TFC crowd to be honest, or at least it seemed that way to me. Expansion team which is dead last overall playing on a cold night on the wrong end of an 11 game winless streak STILL packing them in at BMO with an enthusiastic adult crowd for a match that's televised. Huh? Doesn't seem like MLS at all does it boys? P.S. Officials did lose control of that match a bit but it was still nice to see Hector giving Waterreus the gears there towards the end. Drove him nuts. That was funny P.S.S. Boyen's red seemed damned odd to me. Tired, clumsy stab but "serious foul play"? Maybe I shouldn't watch these things sober anymore. Miss too much. Gian-Luca
What I didn't understand is why Robinson was moved into the back four when Pozniak would have been a better choice to play central D (or even Braz) once Boyens was dismissed. I also don't see how they can give Samuel MOTM - not that he was totally pathetic the way he normally is but clearly Wynne, Edu & Brennan were the keys to the victory. Mind you whoever decides that award has pretty well been wrong all season, so perhaps I shouldn't be surprised. Nice to see Gala get the start & the still-young Tyler Hemming get some first-team playing time. They both looked quite good, good enough to ask why Mo hasn't played more of them over the past month or so. I can remember a certain game against Columbus that we lost a couple of weeks ago on two second half goals because they made three subs & we didn't, the excuse being there was nobody on the bench - and yet the same two players were available for that game too. marktci
What I really don't understand is Mo throwing Boyens under the bus after the game. Basically said that it was a stupid challenge and that he deserved the red. I know that Boyens won't be back, but geez, do we need to start burning bridges already? Agreed and I have no problem with Mo stating the obvious. We all knew it. As soon as it happened, I knew he was gone. It was an awful attempt at a tackle and he got what he deserved. ... and it directly led to their goal. Our revamped back four totally screwed up as they didn't compensate for Boyens absence. The scorer was Boyens man (if he'd been out there).
Gian-Luca
Where I would criticize Mo though is his statements that he was forced to put Robinson as a central defender. He wasn't. You got Poz & Braz that can play that role, they could have left Robinson in the midfield.
ag futbol
Everyone loves to make fun of ESPN’s commentary but I can live with it for the actual production value they provide. It’s better than the score sending out one camrea to cover the game on a shaking grand stand. ESPN actually had replays, which is more than you get from either sportsnet or the score. VPjr
I agree with G-L and dbailey. The very second that Boyens brought Jozy down, I turned to my buddy and said "He's gone". It was the right call and it was a stupid decision by Boyens. Rely on your teammates if your legs can't carry you to make the proper play. Chopping an opponent down with a sloppy, ill timed tackle when the opponent is already a man down and trailing by 2 goals will never result in anything positive. Other than that, it was an enjoyable game. The team's played pretty evenly. We had chances, they had a few and the game was played at a nice pace. The refereeing was generally not great (far too many whistles...let the men play a bit) but it was a great night overall. Player evaluations: Gala - I was very pleased with Gala's play (he needs to get a bit stronger but showed alot of composure out there). Edu - played very well and effectively dealt with the abuse he was getting heaped on him. Brennan...well, as always, he's a rock. Wynne - He's so fast and so strong. I wish he was a bit better with the ball at his feet. He's still young. I would love to seem him work on ball handling and passing. he's got all the physical tools to play this game at the highest level. Let's see if he can develop the finer skills Cunningham - somewhat invisible but looked dangerous a few times Samuel - seemed to be in the mood to work a bit harder than usual but still not overly impressed. He can't be a starter if this team wants to succeed. Regular Sub...maybe. Starter...Nope! Braz - not much to say. Wasn't bad but uncapable of making a good first pass. Dunivant - Horrible in 1st half, better in 2nd half Boyens - Dumb Red Card...decent in the air but, like Braz, not a good passer of the ball Robinson - quietly solid when playing in the holding MF role. Stama - nice work for the most part. deserved his first win. Too bad he couldn't manange a clean sheet Nice to see Hemmings get some minutes. I'd like to see more from the youngsters when they are on the road the next 2 games. Who cares if we lose. It would be good for Mo to see them play and assess them when playing at a higher level. Mo says we need 6 or 7 guys for next year...who knows...maybe one or two of those replacements are sitting on our DEV roster right now.
Whither Canada
quote:Originally posted by Andrew W The ESPN announcers were, in a word, horrible. And what was all that about Braz and his "hockey skates" ?? Twice, yet. Hard to believe that was a network crew and not a local Red Bulls broadcast. If you look at it objectively, we're near the bottom in points, goals scored, goals allowed, and we've got the longest scoreless run in the history of the league. If I went into a situation like that I'd be tempted to slag a team off too, but it was a very unprofessional performance. It was nice to see it in hi-def though. SoccMan
Ok the ESPN guys were not great, however, they were not as bad as some people make them out to be. I think that people on here have a bias towards American soccer broadcasters, therefore, right from the start watch the game with this bias when viewing games done by Americans. The ESPN crew did mention a few times throughout the broadcast on how amazing the atmosphere and fans are at BMO. However, it seems that people from this board who watched the game done by ESPN seemed to have missed this. Just because a guy has a British accent does not make someone good, a good example is this Nigel Reed character who is an excellent cure for insomnia whenever he is calling a game, and don't get me started on the horible Gerry Dobson. Richard
Give me Nigel Reed over any American and many Canadian soccer commentators any day. We don't need soccer games called as if they were hockey games.
Cheeta
Wynalda tends to have those dramatic pro-or-against swings within the matches. He tries to be the down to earth working class man on the broadcasts but since he ain't, can't really pull it off. Takes some getting used to his style. Maybe it works good with NFL Joe Lunchbox. Not sure but is ESPN2 aiming for the Joe Lunchbox crowd with it's MLS broadcasts? Rob Stone isn't that bad after his fashion. His humour isn't very clever especially when he tries to play it off Wynalda but at least he tries. They both do tend to be homers I've found but certainly weren't the other night. ESPN's production outside the commentary is absolutely 1st rate in my opinion. They budget for a 1st rate show and execute a 1st rate show. The camera angles and shot selections were very good, well timed and added to the experience of the match rather than taking away from it. Anyway, not really my cup of tea if I'm going to watch a match with the sound on. As a whole, I would take the ESPN coverage over SportsNets but that isn't saying a lot. If MLS could blend ESPN's production team with CBC's match commentators the league would look brilliant.
Richard
No problem with ESPN production quality, just the commentators. Could also do without all the visual distractions that have nothing whatsoever to do with the main coverage the Score insists on leaving on the screen. ag futbol
I agree that the ticker and the other stuff look terrible. Unfortunately, the score can’t do anything about that. Because their licensed as a “sports highlight channel” they have to leave the ticker and give the annoying information updates that split the screne (CRTC at it’s best!). Richard
Well, I'd rather have the CRTC and its occasional quirks than a complete free-for-all in the media. Seems many of the digital cable specialty channels manage to worm out of many of their original licence conditions anyway. I mean, what the hell is CSI: New York doing being shown repeatedly on the History Channel! I know they're old shows but...

Thankfully the CRTC has ordered History to stop showing the program as it, obviously, has nothing to do with "history". I'm just surprised that they gave Alliance Atlantis until the end of the year to remove it. ... and yes, a free for all would be the absolute worst thing that could happen to Canadian television.
