VPjr
Jonathan Parolini (91) should vault himself into consideration for the next U20 group. He played (and excelled) in Italy at the Eccellenza level last year and will most likely be graduating to a higher level of competition for the upcoming season. He's a very pacy wing player, capable of playing on either the right or the left.
Keegan
I haven't seen many of these guys play but from the performance against Argentina and knowing how many players we were missing it should be a solid team. How does this team compare with 2007? I think this team is deeper meaning we aren't going to have as many gaps as in 2007. Central midfield was bad in 2007 with 3 guys playing who were all 88s and hadn't played first team ball at all. This time we have guys like Melo and Bonifacio. Melo is a depth player I know but Bonifacio seems to start every game. In 2007 we also had a problem at LB with O'Connor but now we have some good backs with Owusu-Ansah who imo should have started in 2007, Nakajima-Farran and Suprenant. We could have a VERY good strike force if Hoillet plays for us (PLLLEASSE), Hoillet and Haber who will hopefully be at Leeds. And you can't forget the impressive Oliver Lacoste-Lebuis who is at Strasbourg who can play center back or midfield. Midfield is probably better for him. Looking back on 2007 D'Agostino should have been a starter but wasn't because of playing College. Add to this the two TFC studs Nana Attakora-Gyan and Gabe Gala who have been impressive in friendlies and the argentina match. Goal is a VERY strong point, with Adam Street and Misciewcz (sp)
An Observer
I completely agree that this U20 side seems to have much more depth. And there are many more such as the whole Vancouver Residency side, a few additional keepers, some central defenders in Scotland (gianotta and adams), and a couple with Trois Riviere Attak. This being said, my big question mark is who will be the stars of this side. The players that will make a difference. In 2003, it was Hume and Hutchinson. Last year, it was Begovic, Edgar, Johnson and Peters (who I agree were shut down in the World Cup but certainly were the difference makers). I think the next year will tell alot. If one of the 3 TFC players can start getting some serious minutes (likely next year); if bonifacio can step it up a notch, if Haber can make Leeds and get first team minutes, Owusu-Ansah needs minutes with Hertha Berlin's U23 side as well. We definitely need some of these guys to make the next step so they can form the nucleaus of the side in qualifying and the WYC (assuming we make it). If that happens, I am confident we will be ok as we definitely have more depth which means we can play those players who are in form and sit (or leave out) those that are not. Also, Lacoste-Lebuis has disappeared (when I checked a few months ago on the strasbourg side he had no minutes for the reserves, or A or B sides). I wonder if he is injured or possibly they loaned him out. I could see him in the middle if Attakora-Gyan can form a good partnership with Staith, Tannous or one of the Scotland defenders. However, putting Lacoste-Lebuis with Attakora-Gyan would definitely give us a very solid pairing at the back. Then you could pair Bonifacio with a more attack minded central midfield player like Melo. Either that or play 3 across the middel with Owusa-Ansah, Lacost-Lebuis, Bonifacio with the 3 up front being Gala Haber and Hoillet. Which leaves the last question, if Hoillet commits he sure looks like one of the difference makers.
Ivan
I think you are correct An Observer. We need a difference maker like Hume or Hutchinson were in 2003. Hoillet is probably our best bet. Nana looks to have the potential to be a stopper at the back. By the way, just went to the Strasbourg site and OLL is listed with the "CFA" which I think is the reserve squad (shown on the site ahead of the U18s where he was listed last year). I recall he was named by Stephen Hart as the "player to be the next Canadian star" when asked. No sign of Sean Rosa with the Metz CFA team, however. And lets not forget about Randy Edwini-Bonsu, who potted 2 more goals yesterday to lead the VWR to the Western Finals. The Residency reached the finals despite losing 5 players to the Cottbus training camp, although the squad looks to be bolstered by the likes of Stephen Leslie. ag futbol
As long as we have Olivier Lacoste-Lebuis and Nana Attakora-Gyan in the back line i will be damn excited. Throw in KOA over on the left and someone else on the right and you have a backline that can keep possession and distribute. That will go miles to helping increase our level of play. Not sure who i'd rate, as i haven't seen much of our other defenders, and i really think Gala is more of a mid. The pool generally does look much deeper this time around. Keegan
I have Oliver as a friend on Facebook and he is playing with Strasbourg U-18s Im pretty sure. They have a pretty sick setup a big training center with tons of fields. He is wearing the captains armband in his profile picture so im guessing he is pretty important for them. I still think he is a midfielder and not a central defender. Owusu Ansah is a right defender. We are pretty deep at left back and left wing. Jake Inglis (Inverness CT Reserves gets a lot of minutes), Suprenant (my bet to start at left back), Gabe Gala (starting left winger) and Paris Nakajima-Farran. Adam Street has to be the starting keeper. We need some more 91s +. Every team has had around 5 guys who could play next cycle this team only has a couple so far. Reagrding OLL, just going by the Strasbourg site. KOA usually plays on the right (at least every time I have seen him). I agree Suprenant and PNF look to fight it out for the LB position, although I think PNF played on the right against Argentina. Inglis is an 88 so is too old for this round. Other 91s include Ethan Gage who plays major minutes for Whitecaps Res, Damien Merrette, who last I heard was in Brazil, and the other keepers (Stillo, Debellis). Fabian Troche is in Greece, but stated on Canucks Abroad that he has 3 countries to chose from. I watched Ashtone Morgan play for TFC Academy vs. Roma Wolves and he looked pretty good at left back. Lomonty
^ The only way he gets capped this WCQ is if he (A)- tears Bundesliga 2 apart or ( if we're eliminated from the group stage early and Mitchells replacement begins capping young talent and let's the older guys focus on club football. He's an amazing talent for the future and surely has a spot at 2010 if our analsyis of him is right, but to involve him and the slimiest, diritest, sleeziest region of football in a WCQ qualifying campaign at his age would be aking way too much of him. masster
Nice article on Edwini-Bonsu http://www.canada.com/theprovince/news/sports/story.html?id=3e7b8b56-d8c4-4586-92fc-be9fd693fdd1 Young striker dreams big with Caps Has the happy habit of scoring just in time Jim Jamieson, The Province Published: Thursday, July 31, 2008 It's hard to say if anyone on the current Whitecaps roster might cross over and play for a new Major League Soccer franchise in 2011. But assuming the Whitecaps are successful in their bid for an MLS expansion team, it's a safe bet that players such as Randy Edwini-Bonsu will be prime candidates to wear Cap colours in three years' time. Edwini-Bonsu has been one of the top players in the Whitecaps residency program since it started last September. He's a key reason the team is off to Ontario for Saturday's United Soccer Leagues Premier Development League semifinal against the Thunder Bay Chili. In playoff action, the 18-year-old striker scored with seconds left in extra time to send a game against San Fernando Valley Quakes into overtime and then scored the winner in a 3-1 verdict. Next day, he scored twice and added an assist in a 4-1 victory over Tacoma. Residency managing director and coach Thomas Niendorf -- who assisted England star Owen Hargreaves' move from Calgary to German giant Bayern Munich as a 16-year-old -- said the aim is to provide an option for promising players to stay in Canada. "Randy is a great example of what this program can do," said Niendorf. "He was already in France for one year, but he wasn't ready for it. We initiated a program where he needed to get better at some things. It took some time for him to really appreciate us, and once he did, he really started to put the necessary effort and understood he needed to think the game better. He had his ups and downs, but he's now arrived at a performance level that definitely gives him a chance to look at a career opportunity in Europe." Although two German clubs have expressed interest in Edwini-Bonsu for their Under-23 programs, there's a chance he could play with the Whitecaps' USL First Division club. He'll join the senior team in mid-August, following the PDL season. The Caps could use another player to put the ball in the net. Edwini-Bonsu, who moved to Canada with his family from Ghana in 2002, said the residency program was night and day from his experience with FC Metz reserves. "Over there, they expect you to know things at a certain age, but in Canada, we miss that development," said the striker, who has 15 caps with Canada's Under-19s. "The experience [here] has been great, training twice a day and learning how to prepare mentally. It makes you a better player." Edwini-Bonsu, who didn't play organized soccer until he arrived in Edmonton as a 12-year-old, looks forward to a shot with the senior Caps, but the immediate goal is to continue the squad's roll in the PDL playoffs. The group of 17- and 18-year-olds have been playing opponents four and five years older. The Residency team was 11-4-1 in the regular season, while Thunder Bay was 13-2-1.
