My 200 Ruble Bet on Canada

I recently returned from three weeks in Yaroslavl, Russia. While there I went out with some friends to watch Russia-England in the Euro qualification at a bar/gambling hall. In looking at the odds I was surprised to see that it was possible to bet on the Canada-Costa Rica match on the same night. I am not much of a gambler but I decided I couldn't let the opportunity pass to bet on a Canadian soccer match in Russia so I put down 200 rubles (about $8) on a Canadian victory (#1055;#1086;#1073; 1 which means victory for the first listed team). Alas the game ended in a tie so I lost my money but the gambling slips made an interesting souvenir. A Canada victory paid 2.4 times the initial bet so had they won I would have won 240 rubles plus the initial 200 for 480 rubles.

Here is my betting slip:

Here is the odds sheet with the Canada-Costa Rica odds circled. Canada was a slight favourite. It was even possible to bet on Norway-Canada at the Woman's World Cup which is the third match from the bottom.

From the looks of the slip, you were unhappy with the result. :D

Of course I was hoping for a Canadian victory but the crumpled nature of the slip is due to the drunken state in which I left the bar (and the night was far from over at that point). I actually didn't find out the result until the next day due to the 8 hour time difference. I was almost relieved not to have won because the effort of finding and going to the bar (I had forgotten where it was located) to collect my winnings probably would not have been worth the $20 I would have received.

Jarrek if you read this, I see that my Cyrillic letters aren't displayed. I know we had a thread about how to write cyrillic on the forum but I have forgotten how and can't find the thread so if you could explain it again I would appreciate it.

Yaroslavl! Cool! I had a brief visit there nine years ago while on a Moscow to St. Petersburg cruise. Some beautiful sights there!

There are some beautiful women there too but of course I am only interested in the cultural aspects of the city.[}:)]

There is a guy from Russia in my martials club that has never heard of it.

I am sure it is famous for the beaches right?

If this guy is a black belt don't let him know I said this but if you are from Russia and don't know Yaroslavl you would have to be incredibly, badly educated. It would be like a Canadian who never heard of Calgary except for Yaroslavl is far more historically/architecturally important than Calgary. Man there is even a style of church construction called Yaroslavlsky which is also the name of one of Moscow's major train stations. Not to mention that they have one of the top hockey teams in Russia (currently coached by Canadian Paul Gardner and featuring Alexei Yashin and Randy Robotaille, saw them play two games this time) and also a very good soccer team, Shinnik, who is usually in the Russian Premiership and will be promoting back to the top next year after one year in the 2nd division. Not really famous for its beaches (it is in northern Russia) though it does have some beaches on the Volga river.

Let's hope that the reason he doesn't know the city is your pronounciation.

Yeah, I talked to him last night. He knows all about it.

He is one of those Russian dudes that is both brilliant and completely insane....
