Joey Saputo (Montreal Impact) and MLS

Guys, after watching the photo postings of the new Montreal Impact stadium (by the way amazing photos), it leaves me scratching my head as to why Montreal has not seriously pursued an MLS bid. What's sad here is that the Montreal Impact is nowhere mentioned in the last MLS expansion article. I'm wondering if Montreal Impact owner Joey Saputo will ever speak-out openly about his MLS intention, that's if he has any. For Saputo ignoring MLS, I do think that he's missing-out on an amazing opportunity $$$$$$$$.

Well who is to say he has not spoken with MLS? Didn't someone say on these boards that Garber claims to have spoken with the Impact? So maybe they have.

But you need to remember that Toronto has the rights until 2010. So until that time Montreal are locked out.

I think this is so wrong from TFC. They need a local Canadian rival from a close proximity. Montreal fits this role so perfectly.

Clearly MLSE didn't agree with your position originally Luis. In their shoes I would have demanded similar protection. At the time they committed to TFC they had no idea that the public response to the club would be so positive. Besides, I suspect that if Saputo wanted in to the MLS - which he couldn't practically do before the 2009 season now, MLSE would waive that particular clause for the very reason you give.

Yup, Garber stated that to the media during halftime of the Beckham game.

That's also when he forecast 16 teams by 2010 and 18 teams by 2012.

MLSE's monopoly is more useful from the point-of-vue of limiting competition for Canadian spots.

It wouldn't make much more money with a local rival.

I disagree. It wouldn't make much more ticket revenue since they are sold out anyway. However, a second Canadian team especially in their traditional rival city would do a lot from a media, marketing and television interest/revenue perspective. I think the main reason for the exclusivity clause is the lack of Canadian talent that can play at the MLS and that would be willing to play for an MLS salary. At the moment it is hard enough for TFC to field Canadian players of the needed quality without having a second team competing for the same talent. I think if the MLS were willing to lower the domestic quota requirements that TFC would be willing to give up the exclusivity clause earlier than required.

I think you guys are saying the same thing.

No, I am saying they would make more money. Increased exposure and increased television audience would increase revenues. The lack of cheap available Canadian talent at MLS level would be the problem that needed to be solved to realize this (plus whether the league really wants more Canadian franchises short term).

early on, the purpose of the exclusivity clause may have been to give TFC time to establish themselves. However, now that they have been shocked by the level of support, the only reason for the exclusivity is because of the lack of Canadian talent that is MLS ready (or willing to accept an MLS salary).
