amacpher
Fabinho of Brasil may have scored the fastest goal in a finals of any FIFA competition. Nine seconds from kick-off against New Zealand! Also Peru upset the hosts, South Korea, 1-nil. The goal scored by Peru was bizarre to say the least! Does anyone know why there are 5 CONCACAF teams that qualified in this tournament? Seems a bit excessive!
Guest speedmonk42
Thought Kara Lang had that off a kick off.

Seems a bit excessive! The tournament just expanded to 24 teams, Mexico won the 2005 tournament and Mexico, USA and Costa Rica all qualified for the 1/4 in 2005 so it isn't excessive to give more spot to CONCACAF due to the collective performance of our teams in 2005. They might reduce it if CONCACAF teams don't do well this time but I would say that we will have 4 spots minimum.
amacpher
The hosts are almost eliminated already! Costa Rica beats South Korea 2-nil. Meanwhile Brasil now has a +12 goal difference after thrashing Korea DPR 6-1!

Although the USA could still finish second if they beat Belgium and get some help.
Pecks
England beat Brazil 2-1 - but can't find a mention of it on the UK internet sites. Seems they don't think much about the U-17 World Cup (or the U-20 World Cup).

Ivan
Costa Rica & USA advance to the round of 16, but both have tough matches vs. Argentina and Germany respectively. Haiti manages to tie one of their games vs France (Frankreich?), while Honduras and T & T lose all 3. T & T score 1 goal and allow 14.

Guest Jeffery S.
Spain beats France in penalties after going 1-1 after the extra period, very close match. In semis they face Ghana who beat Peru 2-0. In the other quarter finals starting now its Argentina vs. Nigeria, with England facing Germany in the last match of the day. Those winners face each other in the other semi. We've been getting Spain games live, but I slept in and missed this morning's. Bojan, the Barça striker, doing well with four goals, but leading scorers are players from the African nations still alive.
Guest Jeffery S.
I erred saying the other quarter finals were yesterday, they were played today. Nigeria kept on a good run beating Argentina 2-0, another goal from tournament leader McCauley Chrisantus. Germany wiped out England 4-1, big win. So Spain faces Ghana and Germany takes on Nigeria in the semis midweek. Final next weekend.
Guest Jeffery S.
Spain beats Ghana, an even and fast 90 minutes had it drawn at 1 (goal from Ghana's Adams, a strong player), then Bojan scored with four minutes left in the 2nd extra period for Spain to make it 2-1. A bogus and terribly capricious yellow from a poor ref in the dying seconds, for supposedly not giving the distance on a free kick, got him a 2nd yellow and he is out of the final. Unless an appeal is accepted. Definitely the team's top player. You get kicked like **** and they foul you all over the place, they have to shoot you for a penalty to be called in your favour, but if you do something harmless like stand on the ball after a foul they card you. NOT for the fans or the good of the game. In the other semi today Nigeria take out Germany, getting two early ones including the first by tournament scoring leader Chrisantus, with the Germans getting one back before the break. Germany pushes all 2nd half but in the dying seconds Nigeria make it 3-1. Final on the 9th; with Spain missing Bojan, Nigeria will be favoured to take it. loyola
quote:Originally posted by beachesl ..something harmless...but stupid... Agree, standing in front of the ball before a FK is an automatic yellow these days. I don't care if the ref had a bad game, it seems to me that he got it right on that one. amacpher
When the free-kick is taken less than 2 seconds after the foul, the situation becomes less black and white. I think the referee could've used a little more discretion there. Soft call.

So Nigeria took the Gold. Entertaining game even with no goals. Both teams highly skillful.
