This all-European based squad has got me thinking: what would an all-North American based squad look like?

The answer? Not too good.

------------------Onstad

Braz—------Serioux—-----Stewart—-Jazic

-------------------Nash

-----------Pozniak------Harmse

De Rosario---------------------Brennan

-----------------Lombardo

Stamatopoulos

Ribeiro

Gervais

Reda

Ricketts

Canizalez

Chin

I hope this is not what we are going to be seeing against Costa Rica.

I'm sure its not what we'll see.

How many European-based players would we need to add to this squad to make it acceptable?

It's a Fifa date so you can bet your house that there will be more than just a a few Euro based players. This is a big game. This is the first time in forever that the MNT is playing Toronto. They need to field the best team they can.

In fact, it would not surprise me all that much if most of the team is made of Euro based players and only have 5-6 players who play in MLS (hopefully none from USL)

If I had to guess, I would suggest an 18 man lineup would look like this:

Onstad

Stamatopolous

Brennan

Jazic

Serioux

Stalteri

Ledgerwood

McKenna (Stewart if McKenna can't/won't come)

DeGuzman

DeRo

Hutchison

Bernier (but if doesn't come, I would try to use this game to cap tie DeJong)

Harmse

Radz (if he doesn't come, I would pick Pozniak as he is playing ok for TFC)

Friend

Hume

Peters

Gerba/Occean (whichever one can make it)

I am looking forward to the day when Gordie Chin is back in the mix, I always was fond of him as a player and thought he had amazing potential. He is a guy who would have been amazing if he could have caught on with a Euro club, and I still think he could raise his level a lot.

Anyone seen him play this year in USL Div 1, anyone know how he is doing in the Carolinas?

Agreed!!

I'm hoping for a couple fewer than that: DeRo, Jazic, Brennan, and possibly Stamatopoulos (depending on his form) would be my NA selections at this time.

Serioux has played well the few times I have seen him suit up for FC Dallas. Strong and composed. however, he is out with a slight injury and wont play this week and possibly next.

I can see him fitting a role as a defensive sub. he is good a winning the ball, which is a trait you want if you have a lead you are trying to protect

I think it is a good measure of how much we have improved that this North American lineup is about as good as our A team from as recent as 5 years ago. We just have to start getting consistent results in line with the improved talent available.

I agree with you completely but I wish the depth was just a bit better. I wish that there were two seperate lineups that we could put out there (sort of like a 1 and 1A type of thing) where the drop off from one roster to the other is very minimal.

At this point, the US could literally put 3-4 completely unique squads that all would be able to compete at a high level in CONCACAF. I don't expect us to ever have 4 teams of relatively equal quality in the forseeable future but even 2 full squads (about 40-44 top notch players in the MNT pool) would be fantastic.

True, but the real question is which of our star European players will opt out of the game due to it being played on FieldTurf? I'm wondering if that will factor into some of their decisions.

Wouldn't our Scandinavia based players be used to playing of turf?

As I was throwing this lineup together, pouring over a list of the 60 or so Canadians who play at the top two levels in NA, my initial reaction was that we have a pretty weak domestic pool.

But as I look at the 18, I actually don't think its too terrible afterall. I have certainly seen us field worse squads for a friendly.

The radio ads that are running in the Toronto market to promote the CR-Canada match use JDG's name in the ads so I feel it's safe to assume that he will be there, health permitting.

I think it would be safe to assume most of the Euro based players who are originally from Toronto or the GTA will be very motivated to play in this match. Might be the first time any of them have worn the Maple Leaf in front of a home town crowd.

How is Serioux doing these days would anyone still consider him for a CB or DM role?

I am happy to see him back playing again and from what I have seen he is still being used as a centre back by Dallas which is good in that it puts him in the mix for the MNT in that role. I still feel that he remains a "work in progress" as a CB, especially with reading the game and avoiding rash challenges but when he returns to fitness and if he has a good playoff run at club level then he'll definitely increase his chances of being in the CB pool for the nats.

The penalty he gave away very late in the Superliga match a few weeks a good prompted my comment about rash challenges.

I think since Depor has a few people who could get a call-up from the Americas, including Guardado for Mexico and Taborda from Uruguay (and maybe Coloccini, don't know what Uruguay or Argentina are doing), it makes it easier for him to go as well, just another international committment across the pond. That is good for us. No Depor player was called by Spain for the friendly vs. Greece on the 22nd in Salonika.
