Road to FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010

Dale Mitchell's reign as Canada's men's senior head coach begins this month with a 22 August friendly against Iceland. It continues next month with an international friendly on home soil, the 12 September match against CONCACAF rival Costa Rica at BMO Field in Toronto.

Both matches, however, are just preparatory work for the real job: FIFA World Cup qualifying that takes place next season. Canada hasn't qualified for a men's FIFA World Cup since Argentina 1986, so their goal is pretty straight forward: qualify for South Africa 2010.

Mitchell is the eleventh coach in charge of Canada's World Cup qualifying efforts. Of the 10 coaches before him, only Tony Waiters managed to qualify for a FIFA World Cup. Among Waiters’ troops back in 1986 was a young player named Mitchell.

Before coming to the senior team, Mitchell coached Canada at the last three FIFA U-20 World Cups: UAE 2003, Nederland 2005 and Canada 2007.

Wow. I bet I could even find some casual baseball fans who knew the 86 world cup was in Mexico.

Easy guys, that is just the result of sloppy (or no editing). It's easy to mix up names (ie WC host vs winner) when you're just typing along trying to get your thoughts down.

That is something that should have been proofed out, but I don't think it is any reflection on his soccer knowledge...

Agreed. Although it is an example of the amateurishness of the CSA, and their website in particular.

I'm usually the one who'll give a break to the CSA for that sort of things but I think Mr Scott has been horrible as a communication director (poor CSA release, no rosters, lots of mistakes in the players section of the website, etc...) so I'm gonna criticize him and the CSA for their amateurish work.
