"N.S. soccer entry needs four players

By GORDIE SUTHERLAND Sports Reporter | 4:41 AM

The home team has holes to fill before women’s action starts in two weeks time at the Canadian senior soccer championships in Halifax.

Halifax City Quincy’s head coach Carl Hayre says he’s looking to pick up four players because some of his regulars are unavailable, including a couple of notables who are tied to their varsity commitments with the Ottawa Gee-Gees.

While Atlantic University Sport soccer takes a break at Thanksgiving, the other Canadian university leagues don’t.

Halifax City has four players with Ottawa, the reigning champs in Ontario.

Hayre said Laurel Fougere will miss the entire national tournament and he figures Megan Bell may only get to play on the last day of the event, which is Thanksgiving Monday. Rachael Swetnam is also staying behind in Ottawa, but Gee-Gees coach Steve Johnson has agreed to release striker Sarah d’Apollonia for senior nationals.

"The University of Ottawa team doesn’t have many natural defenders so Laurel Fougere, although she played midfield for us this year, she’s actually a defender, so it’s difficult for the Ottawa coach to release Laurel," Hayre said. "Also Rachael Swetnam has been playing in the back. They’re struggling for defenders this year, so he just can’t release them."

Hayre is also without Patricia Martins, who has been out with a knee injury for most of the season.

He said teams are allowed to add players under special circumstances from teams that didn’t compete in provincial playoffs.

He has approached "seven or eight players" about the possibility of joining Halifax City for nationals.

"It certainly will affect the chemistry of the team," Hayre said of the lineup changes. "We’ll end up having to move players around to different positions to cover for players who are missing who were starting players."

Traditionally it has been difficult for club teams to continue group training leading up to nationals. The problem is magnified with Halifax City because it’s a young side with 13 of 19 players busy with varsity programs.

Hayre said he hopes to get a session together this Saturday. The only official team practices are lined up for the two days before the tournament starts on Oct. 3.

The good news for Quincy’s is that Gracie Haupt is off the injury list and back training. Hayre also expects all-star striker Katie Prowse to be OK for the tournament.

She hurt her left ankle earlier this season and then injured her right ankle while competing with the St. Francis Xavier X-Women.

"She was on crutches for a couple of days," Hayre said. "She’s hoping to go back to light training this week. She’s quite a competitor and she’ll push herself to get healthy.""

A Message from the Board of Directors of the Nova Scotia Soccer League:

As most of you are aware, the Canadian Men's and Women's Senior National Soccer Championships will be held in Halifax beginning Wednesday October 3 through Monday October 8. This will be the best showing of Canadian amateur soccer talent to be seen in Atlantic Canada in years. We encourage you to circulate news of this great event to your colleagues and friends as we attempt to get all Soccer fans to come out in droves, particularly when the Nova Scotia teams play (Wednesday and Friday evenings at Mainland North Common- and on the weekend), but also when the other provincial teams play each other. Nova Scotia is ably represented by the Premier Teams of Halifax City Soccer Club at both the men's and women's divisions.

To make for a better setting, HRM has installed 800 brand new seats on the west side of field # 1 and with 500 original seats, the event will be able to accommodate 1300 plus fans on Field 1 and another 400 on Field 2, significantly more than could be accommodated for the NSSL EastLink Premiership finals (900 seats) when in excess of 1100 were in attendance. SNS is seeking to better that number not once, but many times during the championships.

To bring the news of this event to more and more Atlantic Canadians, the SNS Local Organizing Committee has established a working relationship with both provincial newspapers, The Herald and The Daily News (along with 6-8 community papers) and in particular with Z-103.5 the new rock station in Halifax. They will all be promoting the event beginning Monday October 1 and Z-103.5 will be on site for many of the games with music, interviews and give-a-ways for those in attendance. For free passes to the event, stay tuned to Z-103.5 from Monday through Monday as SNS goes all out to generate support for this event and for the NS representatives at the Championships.

SNS expects 600 players coaches and supporters from all parts of Canada (all 10 provinces are represented) and the SNS LOC plans to put on a fabulous event for them and for you, the Soccer Nova Scotia "Army". There will be a fabulous canteen setup, sponsor give-a-ways, event memorabilia for sale, Z-103.5 music and above all - excellent, competitive soccer and great weather (guaranteed) for all to enjoy.

The NSSL invites you to come on out, enjoy the games with your friends, cheer for any team you choose (we know many of you are still 'come-from-aways') but most of all- have fun at "The Beautiful Game" here in Halifax October 3-8.
