Will Sportsnet show EPL games this year?

The Score will show some games. How many? I don't know. James Sharman said on Sportsworld a couple of days ago that they will be announcing their plans in the next little while. Sportsnet said that they were interested in picking up some games. It had also been reported that a new Setanta Canada channel would pick up a bunch as well.

Right now nothing is finalized and we will just have to wait and see.

This was in The Star today...Chris Zelcovich's column:

SOCCER MESS: With a little more than two weeks before the start of the English Premier League season, Canadian soccer fans know very little about how many games they'll be watching. They now know that The Score will air the Sunday morning game and that The FAN 590 will carry a Saturday game each week. As for the rest, the company that controls Canadian rights is indicating more EPL games than ever will be available here, but there's a good chance fans will have to pay more to watch them. Since Setanta Sports' application for a digital channel hasn't been approved, the best fans can hope for is one Saturday game on Rogers Sportsnet and the rest on pay-per-view. ...

This was in The Globe and Mail a couple of days ago....Bill Houston:

The Score confirmed yesterday it will carry telecasts of the English Premier League's Sunday 11 a.m. EDT games for the 2007-08 season, beginning on Aug. 12 with Manchester United-Reading. As well, The Score will hold ownership of the broadband and mobile rights to all Premiership games for the next three seasons.

The remainder of the broadcasting package has been sublicensed to Setanta Sports, which is scheduled to launch in Canada later this year.

Since I live in the USA where Setanta has already pretty much taken over the Premier League, Champions League and others, I can assure you that you WANT Setanta to get the rights to as many leagues as possible.

You get better coverage and more matches.

There is an article in today's Vancouver Province that if you have Bell Express Vue you will be able to order Senata Canada and watch the Saturday Prem matches But for us folks out west who have shaw we have to wait 8 bloody months before they get their contract with Shaw straightend out !

Just great news from Spain is that TVE has picked up EPL rights for three years at 11 million euros. Well the money maybe is not so great as it is public television, but getting an EPL match live every Saturday afternoon is going to be amazing.

Starting with Aston Villa-Liverpool, the season opener. Clearly the presence of Spaniards in EPL will help audiences, especially Liverpool, but other sides as well.

Don't know if its on topic, but before anyone panics, there's many a website out there where you can watch all the games you want. As long as you like chinese commentary.

Not as good as telly, but ....

I can never get any of that crap to work, and I've tried all the p2p players.

Here's the latest on EPL this season:

New channel goes big on Premier League

A new soccer channel with extensive rights to live English Premier League games is set to begin operation in Canada in a matter of days.

Setanta Sports, an international content provider, will launch a Canadian channel in partnership with Rogers Communications.

Roger Hall, chief executive officer of Setanta's international operation, confirmed Monday that the channel will start in “the very short term.”

Shane O'Rourke, president of Setanta's North American operations, was even more explicit. He said it will be on the air in time for the start of the EPL season on Aug. 11.

“We'll be up and running by the 11th,” he said.

Neither Hall nor O'Rourke would comment on the licensing agreement, but based on Setanta's operations in Britain, Australia and the United States, the Canadian channel will operate as a premium pay service. To subscribe, consumers will pay about $15 a month.

Score Media acquired EPL rights last year. It then flipped the package to Setanta but kept the Sunday 11 a.m. (Eastern) game, which often showcases the best matchup of the week.

The Score has built additional programming around the Sunday morning telecast, including a Friday evening show that will preview the weekend games, a Saturday evening recap of the day's games, and a Sunday morning pregame show.

As well, the Score has retained broadband highlights rights and will stream its Sunday morning telecast.

The third carrier of EPL games will be Rogers Sportsnet. It has bought a Saturday 10 a.m. game from Setanta, but probably won't get first pick from the 10 a.m. slate of matchups.

It didn't hurt Sportsnet in its bid to acquire one game a week that it is owned by Setanta's partner, Rogers.

The bulk of EPL content – a full Saturday schedule, additional telecasts on Sunday and midweek telecasts – will air on Setanta.

O'Rourke says Setanta will provide the most comprehensive EPL Canadian package ever.

Rogers Cable, Cogeco Cable and Bell ExpressVu will carry the channel immediately. Carriage on Shaw Cable, Star Choice and Videotron is expected to take longer.

It sounds like Setanta/Rogers will show six out of ten live weekly broadcasts of the English Premier League. A further two games will be shown on a delayed basis.

"Rogers Cable and Bell ExpressVu are expected to offer the package with an initial free preview period."

cheers,

matthew

It'll be months and months before Sentanta becomes available on Shaw. Mark my words. Which maybe isn't such a bad thing. Let everybody else be a lab rat for a change.

Geez. And here I thought it wasn't possible for me to find ways to give more money to Shaw already.

So in my totally selfish world.

Without paying for digital or satellite ...I'll get one EPL game per week on Sportsnet and one Ligue 1 game on TV5 plus CL on TSN/RDS.....if I want more I gotta buy more.. right? Score or TLN isn't on basic in NB.

Correction, make that a FEW YEARS. Remember Gol TV Canada. IT took nearly one and a half years, before it came to Shaw Cable. I say it will be almost a season and a half before the Sentanta package comes to Shaw Cable!!!
