DeGuzman story on the CBC,Nat at 10 pm

The CBC National had assigned a crew interviewing the entire DeGuzman family and Thursday July 5th at 10 pm the airing will take place.

We will all have the opportunity to hear from Jonathan directly what the plans are for the coming years.

I saw part of the production and this seems to be a very high profile one.

No, G-L, the purpose of this piece will be for Jono to tell the nation how 'proud' he is to be Canadian, so that we all understand how Canadian he feels when he finally suits up for the Dutch.

I hope the CBC asked him about whether or not he had to rescind his Canadian citizenship to apply for a Dutch passport. But I bet this will be a fluff piece, with nothing interesting or new learned. Simply a repeat of what we've already read in the press.

Bobby didn't call the Canadian team crap, he called the Canadian program (ie the CSA) crap. I fully agree with him on that one.

Unfortunately it's not that easy to disassociate the two. A huge component of the Canadian program is the Canadian team.

This can be nothing but good for us. If he says hes going dutch it will look bad on him, the more connection and support he will get from Canada the harder it will be to suit up for the Dutch.

Completely disagree. My take is that a nationally aired interview will provide them with a soapbox to justify the move to Holland. I have a bad feeling that we are about 24-hours away from really bad (but expected) news.

Is it possible that someone could copy and make a torrent of this?

I won't get the chance to see this as I will still be at the chile congo game.

The CBC makes the National available for streaming on their website.

You can find the link here: http://www.cbc.ca/national/

Of course, at this moment, that is yesterday's show.

I just watched it and it wasn't as distressing as it could have been. The decision has not been made yet and I think could go either way. Jonathan admitted that he wants Dutch citizenship so he can move around the EU freely. That is fair but I wonder if his reason matters to the Dutch. In the end his realtionship with his brother may turn the tide. I liked the interviewer's last comment that Jonathan could help lead Canada to the World Cup rather that going for the sure thing with the Dutch. That's the real dream to fulfill.

And then Jonathan said, "ya, you never know, it could happen." (ed: that Canada could make it to the WC)

He did not sound like he believed it would.

Just watched it online. There is no way in hell he's playing for Canada. You could tell by his last statement that he does not believe Canada can qualify for a world cup. He's gone, friends. Time to move on.

John TV, was the interview with Jonathan taped at St. Mary high school in Pickering? Sure looked like it. Weird to seem him stretching on the same track I ran on for four years.

Yes I agree that he didn't seem to think that Canada qualifying for the World Cup was very likely. Good on the interviewer to bring up the question though. It was in general a very well done story. Julian really presented himself well and seemed like a great guy. I especially liked the part where he said he was disappointed that he didn't make the U-17 team but that failure makes you more determined and he subsequently made the U-20 team. Getting cut from a team at a certain age group seems to be the excuse de jour for the traitors. Bobby didn't seem to be pushing Jonathon towards Holland as much as we might have thought. His opinion that Jonathon lived half of his life in Holland and it was up to him to decide whether he felt more Canadian or Dutch seemed reasonable enough except that Jonathon seemed to be making the decision more on questions of money and ambition. At least Jonathon did admit he didn't want to disappoint Canadian fans. I did have the impression though that if he feels he will be a steady starter for Holland that is what he will choose. As an aside I think that players who move to a country to play soccer should not be allowed to play for that country as it gives countries with strong leagues an unfair advantage in international competition.

I just watched the DeGuzman family interview and it seems that Johnathan is very sincere young man, who is very torn, but I do get the impression that he will committ to Holland instead of Canada.

I realize and agree with Bobby DeGuzman differences with the CSA and I get the impression that he is not pushing his son to play for Holland, however Johnathon will do alot more for the game in Canada if he chooses Canada over Holland. I know the chances of playing at a WC is greater in Holland than Canada, but if he plays for Canada, was his big brother on the same pitch could imspire a lot of kids in this country.

I do hope that Big Brother Julian can convince him to play to Canada but that doesn't seem likely at all.

I just watched it...he's a goner. lets move on. If he is a member of the Dutch MNT, he can write his ticket to play in any major league in Europe for big bucks. Playing for Canada? Not as lucrative. It's really too bad.

Julian came off like a prince. I am impressed. I loved when he scored the goal at the GC last month, jumped in the air and pointed to the maple leaf on his jersey. that's pride right there. I would rather support the guys who want to be part of our program rather than guys who will chose canada if they can't play for their prefered team.

The question ultimately is whether Jono is really good enough to play for the Dutch? Opinions?

Many of my family members in Holland think so - but again, right now, people are not very happy with the Dutch team, and let's be honest, Holland has some immigration and racism issues that, as in the past, seem to split the team quite a bit. This is another reason why the Canadian team looked so good in the Gold Cup - it seemed like there was genuine unity amongst the team (at least at the moment). Jono ain't gona get that in Holland, and I'm sure he knows it.

I wish him the best in his decision.

I'll see if I can get the download of the piece - maybe someone can put it up on Youtube.

I'd say our only hope is for him to get bought this summer. That piece really made me think that winning the Gold Cup would've gone a long way towards swaying him Canada's way because he seems really paranoid about missing the World Cup.

Aside from this, he seems like a guy that even if he does play for Canada would be pulling out all the excuses to miss games.
