Copa America 2007 [R]

Anyone else following this amazing showcase of what real soccer is supposed to look like?

Day 1

Venezuela 2 - Bolivia 2

A shameful result for the hosts. Me thinks they are screwed. Venezuela will be the first hosts in a major tourney to not get out of the 1st round (unless the refs save them). pathetic.

Peru 3 - Uruguay 0

No surprise to anyone who follows Peruvian soccer. They have the firepower to go deep in this tournament. In Farfan Pizarro and Guerrero Peru may have a better group of forwards than any other team in the Copa, including Argentina and Brasil.

Please. Peru has good forwards, but they are not in the same planet as Argentina's. Especially considering the good form that Riquelme, Messi and Tevez are currently in. Even Crespo is coming off his best season since his Lazio and Parma days.

Both Uruguay and Venezuela were terrible last night. Expect Peru and Bolivia to progress to the next round.

Uruguay looked dreadful out there. I was hoping for a Peru victory but didn't think it was going to be 3-0. Peru will get out of the group, but they're not going far.

I only saw 80 minutes of the Venezuela game because I had taped the TLN feed and the ceremonies took longer than they should have. It was 80 minutes more than I should have taped. How I stayed awake I don't know. If either team advances and plays like that, they're going to be cannon fodder for the big boys.

That only holds for World Cups (see: Belgium, 2000).

As for Venezuela, a win should get them into the second round, as 8/12 teams qualify.

I thought Peru was very good, all were very light footed and sharp, and Uruguay was dull, disorganized, and typically anarchic. Uruguay has a rep for being talented by excessively rough, and the squandered away the game with poor team concentration. Their coach needs to bring out the whip. Even then they did have a few decent chances, some close ones, the Peru keeper did well.

Peru has height, strength and speed, and a great attitude. I really liked them last night, though the scoreline favours them a bit.

Did not see Venezuela but they were leading and did come close to winning. Venezuela, it should be remembered, has only won 2 games in the history of the Copa America, think that stat is right, they are traditionally terrible, and have come up a lot.

How come no comments about the lack of a penalty in injury time? Venezuela deserved a trip to the penalty spot, but no call.

That should have been a penalty. #8 of Bolivia is the worse player I've ever seen play. He took about ten shots on target and none of them came within 10 metres of the Venezuela net. And he confirmed his uselessness when he committed the foul in the box at the end which went uncalled.

Mexican goalie was amazing.

Why are there two CONCACAF teams in?

Because there are only ten teams in South America, so they usually invite two teams to make it to twelve teams(3 groups of four). This year they chose USA and Mexico.

Wouldn't it be funny if Mexico and US met in the finals and Mexico won[}:)]

That would be hell! Fortunately, its not gonna happen as the USA suck when they're not playing Mexico, and thus, will surely finish rock-bottom in their group.

I think its stupid that they invite two CONCACAF nations. Especially since two groups of 5 works out better than three groups of 4 (no need for the "best third-place teams" nonsense).

Also did anyone notice the knockout pairings? It's more rigged than the Gold Cup!! B2 plays the best third place team and the winner of that plays winner of A1 vs. second-best third place team.

That's scandalous! [:0] That means you're better-off to finish second or even third in group B then to finish top. Of course I'm reading that off Wikipedia so it might be a mistake,(?). But I doubt it’s a mistake since this seems to be a recurring theme in these international tournaments: i.e. we all have to bend-over and grab our ankles so that the home team and fans can have all the fun.

At least now I have a reason to root against Venezuela. And I hope Brasil doesn’t win their group so we can have an Brasil-Argie final.

Mexico - Brasil was a great game, but I can't for the life of me figure out why Dunga had Elano starting and Anderson on the bench. Brasil came to life in the second half with Anderson's inclusion and were it not for Ochoa, Brasil would have won.

I was surprised to see Chile win, but more as a result of Ecuador's second half defensive tactics that let Chile back in the game. Suarez obviously thought he had it in the bag as Ecuador did control the game in the first half. Nice to see Suazo get the brace as Chile finally have someone that can score in the post-Salas era.

Ochoa is a beast in that mexican goal.....it's scary he's only 21.

What a miss by the mexican forward at the end....

It was Nery Castillo. But he was allowed to miss one after single-handedly beating Brasil in the first-half.

Of course, Castillo is about as Mexican as Taco Bell.

I understand that the U.S. has changed up many of their players from the Gold Cup team because of MSL committments. Is that true? Are they treating this tournament as a chance to look at other players? Is this team as "strong" as their Gold Cup squad?

This USA team is pretty weak. They made Gold Cup priority #1 as all the USA ever wants to accomplish in the footballing world is to beat Mexico at home.

I am looking forward to Argentina's 4 goal victory tonight. :)

Mexico always does somewhat well at the Copa, but beating Brazil 2-0 is historic, and something to be proud of. Chile surprised me as well with their goals, but the real news in that game is that Ecuadors golden generation is finished.

It may be a blowout today with Arg-USA. Cant wait.

Mexico is leading Brazil 2-0 at the half. BTW, I am watchin TLN's coverage and recording it over Gol TV's. I perfer the Spanish commentary, even though I have no clue what they are talking about. I like their passion. Plus they are a minute or two ahead of Gol TV's feed.

I have to say Goltv's broadcasts are pretty bland. I will have to check out TLN.

4-1 Argentina

Argentina had its A side out there, while the US foolishly trotted out a B squad. Not that the American A squad would have won, but I don't think they would have looked so outclassed.

The scoreline actually flattered the Americans.

How is it foolish to bring a youthful squad to a tournament that means absolutely nothing to the US? If Brazil isn't taking their own Cup seriously why should we? Six of our starters tonight had 10 or fewer caps for the NT, I think that is great when it comes to the future experience and depth of our squad. We won the Gold Cup, we get to compete in the Confederations Cup prior to the World Cup. It's a win,win as far as I'm concerned. Not to mention Bradley's trying to ready a lot of these kids for his Olympic squad.
