ryan gyaki at hansa rostock

I really doubt that living in Rostock was the problem. It may not be Berlin or Munich but it is not a bad city, located on the sea and in one of the most beautiful areas of Germany, one of the few areas of Germany with undeveloped wilderness. I think this has entirely to do with Gyaki playing his whole career on reserve teams and having a lot of injuries that hampered his development and chances for first team action. I think trying to make a 1st Bundesliga team was just a number too big for him at this stage. He would be better to work his way up by getting 1st team action with a team where he will have much more chance to get playing experience, have success and gain confidence even if that means signing with a 3rd division team or a team in Poland or the Czech Republic. I also think TFC might be a good place for him. At this point I think it matters less where he is playing than whether he is playing. Hansa is just trying to stay in the 1st Bundesliga and that is not an ideal situation to be in for a 22 year old with no professional experience trying to get some 1st team action. I was impressed by Gyaki when he has played for Canada and think he could go far if he remains healthy and finds the right team but I think he has to look at building his career up from a lower level.

Since there is apparently no impetus for Mo to seek him out I doubt we'll see him in Toronto. Since he no longer needs to employ Canadians and he won't get any kickbacks from Barry Maclean.

God I despise Mo. (No hijack intended, please return to normal thread)

I agree that the chances of seeing him in a TFC uniform are quite small unfortunately. Of course he's probably also smart enough to stay clear of Mo Johnston's (shall we call them fluid?) player movements.

I'll always remember Ryan as being a standout for some of our younger teams. He had a rediculously high work-rate and a desire that unfortunately wasn't equaled by some of the people he was playing with.

I don't know how it went for him with Hansa, but if he didn't impress in the Oberliga I don't think he would have much chances with a B3 team.

The important thing for him is to get some playing time as soon as possible, so if he doesn't stick to a club in Europe by January/February, yes, North America would be a good choice. Also, if he's invited, the U-23 qualifications might be a decent showcase for him.

There is a big difference between playing for a Bundesliga reserve team in the Oberliga or 3rd division and playing for a club whose 1st team is at this level. Hansa probably did not decide that he was not good enough for the Oberliga, they decided he was not going to make their 1st Bundesliga team in the near future. In this case he may not be interesting for Hansa because he is taking up a spot of someone who may be younger and have more potential. If you play for a club whose 1st team is at that level they are only concerned with whether you can play at their current level not whether you will be a 1st Bundesliger in the near future.

Just out of curiosity, who were these players with no desire in 2005. I've seen 2 of the 3 qualifications games and the 3 U-20 WC games and I can't remember seeing anyone with no desire to play.

What's wrong with Ryan coming to the MLS. It would not mean an end to his European dreams. Just look at how many American players that have played a few years in the MLS and then went on to have decent careers in Europe. Come back to North America and prove yourself here and I'm sure if you do well in the MLS Europe will come calling again. Furthermore, who is to say that he will even be successful in the MLS, just look at a few of these TFC Canadian players who played in Europe but were complete flops in the MLS this year.

Thanks for the update on Ryan. Hopefully this season goes better for him. He is under contract through end of 2008-2009 season I believe.

(I imagine some wags will be suggesting Toronto as an ideal home - I think his potential is higher than that - might be proven wrong of course).

yeah who would want to come MLS, they might follow down that crummy career path that led to nowhere that has been blazed by former MLS players like Altidor (Villareal for 10$ mil), Dempsey ( 6 mil In think to Fulham) and Adu ( Benfica). Better off staying at a resreve team in Europe and try to follow the the same path as Maycoll Canizales.

Lot of Cdns on your list there. But you know better of course. Worked out so well for Lombardo, Hemming et al.

After exchanging a couple of e-mails with Hansa's press official Axel Schulz he confirmed that Ryan is still with the reserve team and is nursing an injury. No word on the type of injury or how long until he will be back playing.

Nevermind the DDR but I grew up with those teams that played in the Oberliga and Liga and their names bring back memories of long train rides to away games and emotional results. Hopefully Ryan has more luck under coach Dieter Eilts and finds his way to the first team.

Ryan's trial was over after two training sessions. Luebeck is looking for a striker not an offensive mid so I am not really sure why they trialed him in the first place. Disappointing to see someone we had such high hopes for trialing for a 4th division team and not a very good 4th division team at that. My Sachsen Leipzig (Chemie for FCH) plays in the same division and could use him as long as he doesn't mind making an MLS entry level salary. http://www.ln-online.de/sport/fussball/vfbluebeck/2533588/VfB-Testspieler%3A_Einer_weg%2C_ein_anderer_da.htm
