Paddy
I think most know my feelings about Onstad, but that aside, did he really need to drop the American player or was he just slow responding to the attack. I have often felt that he is weakest in covering and coming out from the the posts. I haven't watched the game again, so I haven't been able to watch replays. Just seems to me that he could have come out of his net to cover the angle (was there another attacking player that the ball could have been crossed to if Onstad just covered?). Just curious, not a condemnation.
loyola
I just took a look at the replay and it happens very quickly, he came out well to cut the angle and he's trying to get the ball but he's a fraction of a second late. At that time it's tough for Onstad to judge the length of Beasley touch, so he went for it. You see this situation happen quite often in games and I don't think you can really blame the keeper for it (it's a 50/50, either the keeper takes the ball or he takes down the forward). To answer your other question, I don't think the USA had someone coming in the middle.
BrennanFan
it was definitely a mistake on ostads part. should have left beasley alone bc beasley couldnt score on a breakaway in a million years, he sucks. cant remember the last time a team won a tourney based on being given so many penalty kicks. Well, if we blame Onstad for it I think we should also blame the midfield/defense who let a guy 1 vs 1 with our keeper.
pulsar
As a former keeper myself (which isn't saying much) I am going with loyola on this one. 50/50. In the heat of the moment who's to say what's going to happen...especially 1 on 1. Yes there was contact but DMB embellished it as well. Kinda like the Aussie/Italia match back at the 06 WC. As for Onstad sucking? I wouldn't rank him up there...but he nowhere near sucks
redhat
This is Onstad's problem: for every HUNDRED saves and terrific plays he makes, he'll be remembered for at least ONE mistake. It was quick, Onstad got caught, and DaMarcus Beasley knew it, made sure he made contact, and did da "flop". And automatic card. Don't know if anyone could have done better, let alone a 40-year old goalkeeper who had the confidence of this team in this tournament.
BearcatSA
quote:Originally posted by loyola Well, if we blame Onstad for it I think we should also blame the midfield/defense who let a guy 1 vs 1 with our keeper. Hutchinson was unable to close down Dempsey, allowing him the time and space in midfield to make the pass which exposed a big gap between Hainault and Stalteri. So a number of defensive breakdowns were present on that play.
Gordon
I think a keeper has to know his opponents. He was damn close to getting it, so I won't call it a mistake, but I think if I were the keeper I'd be inclined to play out the convergence of his USL ball skills and World Class speed to see what emerges. Personally, though, I am not inclined to blame anyone, including Midfield/Defence. Speed, its what Beasley does.
CanadasBest
Just like you Paddy, i'm not a fan of Onstad. Right or wrong Onstad committed himself and I think he made the right move. He did hesitate but once he was coming out he was commited. Beasley is fast, but the defence were out to lunch on that play.
