I wrote this to Jamie Treker after a piece on the US-Panama quarter finals, sent on

Hi Jamie

Thanks for the piece on the US's problems with Panama.

As a Canadian fan I think the US has to be favourite.

But I am also sure Canada will score. One more thing:

I'm a bit worried about the amount of diving and play

acting coming from the US, it really hurts me to have

to say it. Frankly, I am worried about getting fair

reffing considering the commercial interest in seeing

a US-Mex final.

ONE ERROR in your latest: it is, of course, LOS

CANALEROS, and not as you have put it, "calaneros".

For obvious reasons related to a certain canal.

All the best

-----------

He wrote back saying that he had not seen any diving and play acting on the part of the referees, for some reason I deleted his answer so don't have the exact words.

Do I look like a friggin' prophet or what? No great credit due though, as it was something you knew could happen the way things were going and the way things have gone in the past.

He acknowledges the terrible officiating, and Mexico and the USA stumbling into the finals, but says that the Americans controlled "the entire first half", which is a bit much.

I think the disallowed goal made people forget that Canada was disappointing for the first 45 minutes.

So true, yet the game was a story of two halves. Canada's comeback

and the American lack of finishing took over in the 2nd.

And if Bocanegra received a red and the U.S. was down a man in

the first half, would the outcome be the same? Moot point.[xx(]

Or it could be that we don't agree with the view that Canada was disappointing for the first 45 minutes. Maybe the first 20 minutes of the second half, but that's about it....
