CanadianSoccerFan
Just read it in the Sun this morning. Stalteri was an honourable mention.
nolando
Hastings?!? Maybe for the last game, but come on, really? And not like Stalteri had the tournament of his life either. How about Hutch or Dero for honourables?
kmacphee
Does anyone else think, for some reason, Hastings has been underrated by our members? Granted I've only really had a chance to see him play this year, but he seems very good. Inverness CT seem to see something. Maybe I've missed something from previous campaigns. All in all, way to go Hastings and DeGuzman!
The Beaver
I think Hastings showed well--very well at times--but I don't know if this means he becomes a starter. At most, I think it means he gets a second look from Mitchell--or a first, really--and I would not be adverse to seeing him around from time to time. Props to him for a good tournie, for getting stuck in, and for his leadership.
jesse
Here it is: 2007 CONCACAF GOLD CUP™ All-Tournament Team Best XI GK: Franck GRANDEL (GLP); DF: Felipe BALOY (PAN), Richard HASTINGS (CAN), Frankie HEJDUK (USA), Carlos SALCIDO (MEX); MD: Walter CENTENO (CRC), Julian DEGUZMAN (CAN), Pablo MASTROENI (USA), Pavel PARDO (MEX); AT: Carlos PAVON (HON), Blas PEREZ (PAN). Honourable Mentions GK: Jose Francisco PORRAS (CRC); DF: Jorge Samuel CABALLEROS (HON), Paul STALTERI (CAN); MD: DaMarcus BEASLEY (USA), Jose Andres GUARDADO (MEX); AT: Jocelyn ANGLOMA (GLP), Landon DONOVAN (USA). Surprised Landycakes didn't make it to the Best XI. I mean, three goals from the spot? Talented no doubt [8)]. And Mastroeni? Wasn't he suspended for the group round? Plays two matches and makes it? Geez.
Cheeta
Thought Mastroeni was in top form against us and had to have been suffering from sore legs Friday. And I've always been a Hejduk fan so no strong complaints about those two making CONCACAF'S 1st eleven. Beasley as an honourable mention is probably right to. Bit disappointed with the point he's at in his career (had higher expectations at one time) but he's still very young. Not so sure about Donavon though. At least from what I'd seen of the GC. Hastings had a couple of dodgy plays in there but otherwise I think he did outstanding. Became a real intimidating force by the end and did in through being strong and commiting to some aggressive, clean, text book tackling. Showed good football smarts and became dependable in moving the ball forward as much as Diesel and Nash. No, I don't think Richard's gotten a bum rap around here. A lot of people have gone from "oy"... to "ah, he's doing all right if a bit scary"... to "he may have played his way back into the NT". In other words he's made people change their mind about him through his play and that's about all you can hope for from the player and from the fans. And did it out of position. Well done. Three of ours selected or as an honourable mention? And I'm sure two or three more in the running (D-Ro, Hutch and Ali). Not to bad, eh?
BearcatSA
Mastroeni was the architect of their central midfield pressure against us (I thought he was their MOTM). And kudos to Hastings: he kept improving and apart from a dodgy headed clearence to Donovan in the first minute, he played quite well and impressed me with his reading dangerous situations. And that shoulder challenge on Donovan was awesome!
MikeD
This is actually the second time that Hastings has been named to the best XI in a Gold Cup. He was also in the best XI in the 2000 Gold Cup, along with fellow Canadians Craig Forrest (MVP), Carlo Corazzin (Golden Boot winner) and Jason DeVos. Like I've said on this board before, Hastings would be on my World Cup squad if I were picking the team.
Ivan
Hastings did a great job, considering he played out of position. He is definately back in the NT picture IMHO. Congrats to him on the award. I also like the way he got in Hume's face after the USA game. You could almost imagine him saying ..... that's the way you gotta play to start for the NT! That'll give Mitchell something to think about next time!
