Bertuzzi44
Great article Ben. "Welcome to CONCACAF, where the only crime is to be surprised" ...sad but true! I'd say the overall quality of reffing at this years Gold cup has been much better than years past. That said, a referee can call a great game and then totally botch one call and that is all anyone will remember. The truly great ref's don't make huge mistakes like that. Archundia is not a great ref and I agree with your sentiment about him never reffing another Canada game ever again!!
Gian-Luca
Would you believe as well that our appeal for Stalteri's yellow failed? This is according to the guys on Inside the Gold Cup (June 20th edition). Apparently the Ref said he meant to give Stalteri a yellow. What a bunch of crap. strobe_z
There's not much else to say about the blown call, but I've seen a quote from CSA president Colin Linford saying ""It's a game played by humans and refereed by humans," said Linford. "If a mistake was made, it's easy in hindsight. . . we just had to accept it. We didn't think he was offside but the referee and the linesman did, so you have to live with it." That sure doesn't sound like letting CONCACAF have it to me. The quote comes from a piece in the Globe and Mail (http://www.globesports.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20070622.wsptgold22/GSStory/GlobeSportsSoccer/home)
canso
To continue the Dylan theme how about these classics: "Ain't gonna work on Warner's farm no more." "It's allright Ma we're only bleedin red and white" "Stuck inside of Chitown with the Benito blues again" "Ballad of a thin (Mexican) man (with a whistle)" and of course the chorus of despair we can all share "Knockin on the Hexagon's door"
Ben Knight
You know, as much as I'm not a fan of the CSA, I had a lot of time and respect for Andy Sharpe and the way he ran things. Please don't tell me I'm going to have to become an even bigger fan of his in retrospect!
JPB
Okay, the whistle was blown, the score is settled, and Canada was knocked out of the Gold Cup. We do not need to be told to live with it. We are living with it. We do need our spokesman to do battle on behalf of the team. Let the officials defend themselves on this one. Challenge them to concede the human error. This is NOT a he said she said. So the least our spokesman can do is press his team's case, let the officials defend their call, and see who has the better view of this thing. THEN, diplomatically, after the heat has been applied for, say, a week or two after the final game has been played, offer the cliches about humans playing humans refereeing. Show some maturity first. Fight for the team. Fight for the sport while you are at it. But don't cave with the urgency of a guilty man seeking a plea bargain.
meteor
quote:"If a mistake was made, it's easy in hindsight. . . we just had to accept it." wow Linford..that's really letting them have it. maybe you can send them a tin of home made cookies with a card that says "it's ok..we understand" for good measure. How about you show a bit of guts and tell those crooked scumbags off. your players played like lions out there..we don't need our officials acting like mice and just rolling over and taking it. they sure as hell wouldn't roll over and take it in England or Germany or anywhere soccer matters. matthew
quote:Originally posted by Ben Knight You know, as much as I'm not a fan of the CSA, I had a lot of time and respect for Andy Sharpe and the way he ran things. Please don't tell me I'm going to have to become an even bigger fan of his in retrospect! The only positive about the Canada-Honduras match in Edmonton was the way the CSA, Frank Yallop and Jason DeVos and Mark Watson treated us after the match when we crossed paths. Andy Sharpe made sure everyone came and thanked us for our support, he kept our glasses full and he felt bad by how gutted we felt. But he felt worse. He would try to calm down and would end up ranting again. He was literally beside himself. Whatever his faults (or perceived faults) were, he loved this country, he loved his teams and he passionately battled anyone who wronged them. I hope that's something that stays with the suits in the CSA. BTW great piece Ben. cheers, matthew PS and if Morgan Quarry wasn't already my favourite CSA employee he would have been after last night.
Joe Keeper
Ben, would you be willing to do a peice specifacally on the unfolding of the Canadian fans reaction to this whole event? Somthing stating our story, and what we think needs to happen for the USA game as well as for the Gold cup and concacaf in general that could raise the average sports fans knowledge of what goes on. Ben Knight
Well, we probably don't agree on everything, Joe. I've got the whole world to cover, and a World Cup coming up. The CONCACAF refereeing situation is an ongoing topic for me. I was warning everyone about it two weeks ago in the piece on the Guadeloupe game. Truth is, most times I don't know what I'm writing until I've written it. I'll try to field whatever happens next as best I can.
Glenn
I hate the fact that Linford's taking this in stride. It was a garbage call, and we've had too many garbage calls go against us. The only way to make things better is to make a lot of noise. You don't have to knock the ref down and call Jack Warner a crook to do it. Just make sure that everyone knows you're outraged and why. CONCACAF won't change unless they're embarrassed into changing. Linford is letting down the fans and the players.
