soccerman2
ITALIA SHOOTERS, LONDON WIN FRIDAY Friday - June 22, 2007 Shooters nip Serbia 1-0 Serbian White Eagles lost their brief 100 per cent record, a 1-0 defeat at home to Italia Shooters and London City picked up its first victory of the season with a 2-1 win over North York Astros, two games in the Canadian Soccer League Friday. Italia forward Kadian Lecky, who scored four goals last weekend including a hat-trick in his team’s 6-1 over London City on June 15, struck the lone goal at the 12th minute mark to give Italia the three points and a dominant top position in the International Conference standings. The game, played at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke, was an end to end affair with lots of activity around both goals, but some near misses and good goalkeeping, especially by Italia’s Camilo Benzi facing shots from Radovic, Braletic, Pop and Viciknez for long periods to the final whistle. Each team lost a player with red cards as a result of a second yellow. Milan Kojic was ejected for Serbia and defender Fitzroy Christie was ordered off from Italia. Both will miss the return encounter between these two teams at The Soccer Centre on Sunday. Shooters improve to a 6-1-2 WLT record for 20 points and Serbian Eagles are now at 4-1-0 for 12 points. Gerson Hazael opened the scoring for London City at the 18th minute mark, heading in for a 1-0 lead at the interval at the Cove Road ground at London. North York Astros tied the score to make it 1-1 at the 74th minute, the goal coming shortly after the Astros lost Brian Carbajal, ejected for violent conduct. Alessandro Bancheri struck the tying goal for the visitors, but seven minutes later, London’s Miguel Knox scored into an empty net following a miscue in the North York defence for a 2-1 final score. London’s first win gives the southwestern Ontario side a 1-4-2 record for 4 points, while the Astros are at 2-3-1 for 7 points, both teams in the National Conference. Rocket Robin
Result of the Friday June 22, 2007 CSL game between Serbian White Eagles and Italia Shooters played at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke at 8:00pm. 6 min…Shooters Kadien Lecky GOAL…Lecky steals ball from defender and cuts impossible angled 10 yard shot from right into left side of net around SWE Milos Scepanovic and goalie Dusan Belic. (The goal had many similarities to Dwayne DeRosario scoring for Canada against Haiti at the Gold Cup last week). Lecky earned a Yellow card for pulling his shirt off and running down the track in celebration. 83 min…Shooters RED card…Fitzroy Christie earns his second Yellow card from referee Justin Tasev for a sliding tackle in which he missed the ball but SWE Nikola Budalic ran into him and was injured at Shooters 35 yard line. 92 min…White Eagles RED card…Milan Kolic earned his second Yellow card for jostling with a player in the Shooters box waiting for a freekick. Final Score:…..Serbian White Eagles………0………..Italia Shooters…………1……….. Attendance was about 1100 on this warm evening with a gusty wind from the north and the sun still shining in the north west on this the longest day of the year. It’s the biggest crowd I’ve seen of the White Eagles games in their games I’ve been to this year. This was the first defeat of Serbian White Eagles after four straight wins. Their big problem is their lack of a scoring punch this season. They’ve only scored 9 goals in five games this year. Last year Gabriel Pop had 27 goals and Sasa Viciknez had 23 goals on their own. Pop, Nenad Stojcic and Milos Scepanovic were subbed at halftime in the hopes of stirring things up. The score line was identical to the Playoff final last year which was deemed a huge upset. This year the Shooters have only allowed 6 goals in nine games while scoring 23. Camilo Benzi earned the shutout for the Shooters with help from his defenders. The game was very rough with the referee giving out six Yellow cards as well as the two Reds. Both teams were guilty at some points of the game of ‘playing on’ while players were injured instead of kicking the ball out of bounds. Kadien Lecky almost scored at 2 minutes when he got away a 10 yard point blank shot and was injured on the play. Right after the goal, SWE Hosni Neto (who took many of the cornerkicks and free kicks and played for the USL Toronto Lynx last year) cornerkick from the right had SWE Gabriel Pop blast a shot from the left over the box. A freekick at 8 minutes from 22 yards on the right was chipped directly to the goalie. At 27 minutes IS Gladston Richards rush to ball on right and boots past defender to Lecky whose 10 yard shot near right line saved by sprawling goalie. Lecky then retreated from the box and collapses with an injury. Eventually Lecky would be replaced at 57 minutes. At 71 minutes, SWE Neto’s cornerkick from right had SWE Milan Kolic head the ball over the net from 8 yards. At 74 minutes, SWE Dragan Radovic gets the ball from left and his 8 yard header from the right hits the right goalpost. Neto had two great freekick chances in injury time to tie the game. At 89 minutes his freekick up the middle was just over the net and at 94 minutes his almost identical positioned shot grazed the top of the bar. soccerman2
APPRECIATION NIGHT THRILLER Saturday - June 23, 2007 Scoreless tie at Windsor While neither team found the net, there was an abundance of excitement in the end-to-end encounter that ended in a scoreless tie between Windsor Border Stars and Portuguese Supra at Windsor Stadium, the only game in the CSL Saturday. It was the Lasalle Stompers Appreciation Night and the large crowd appreciated the goalkeeping of Windsor’s Anthony Santilli and his Portuguese counterpart Michael Silva who time and again kept the opposition off the scoresheet. Windsor striker Aaron Byrd was prominent upfront time and again and Jeff Hodgson of the home team also threatened, while Michael Aigbokie had the best chance to win it all for Portuguese Supra, but sent his shot just over the bar. The tie gives Windsor a 3-4-1 WLT record, tied for top place with St. Catharines Wolves in the National Conference with 10 points, while Portuguese Supra are fourth in the International Conference with a 1-4-3 record and six points. The Attak were impressive in defeating Canadian Lions at the University of Quebec at Trois-Rivieres, with forward Nicolas Lesage scoring twice, at the 13th minute and again at 21 minutes for a 2-0 lead at the interval. Canadian Lions struck at 55 minutes on a goal by Marko Jankovic for a 2-1 score and Jean-Louis Besse made it 3-1 for Trois-Rivieres at th 76th minute mark. Italia Shooters completed the double over Serbian White Eagles with a 2-0 victory before a large crowd at The Soccer Centre in Vaughan, many there to take in a game attended by AC Milan and Italy standout Gennaro Gatusso. It was an attractive encounter with a number of close calls, but it wasn’t until the 68th minute that Denny Velestegui scored from the penalty spot awarded when Italia’s Sean Myers was tripped in the penalty box. Myers scored Italia’s second in the dying seconds of play, a shot just inside the post and to the left of Eagles’ goalkeeper Dusan Belic following a passing play with Geron Duporte. Shooters are well in command of the International Division with a 7-1-2 record for 23 points, while Serbian White Eagles suffered their second loss for a 4-2-0 record for 12 points. North York Astros and London City split their weekend games with a 2-1 win for Astros at Esther Shiner Stadium in North York following a 2-1 victory by London City on Friday night. Forward Fedja Dimitrov opened the scoring at the 21st minute for London in Sunday’s game, but North York Astros responded with a goal four minutes later by Jose Perez, from the penalty spot, and the winner by forward Allessandro Bancheri 10 minutes into the second half. North York improve to 3-3-1 for 10 points to open up a three way tie for second spot in the National Division with St. Catharines and Windsor. London City now has a 1-5-1 for four points.
