RS Posted June 15, 2007 Share Posted June 15, 2007 MORGAN CAMPBELL SPORTS REPORTER As most of Canada's under-20 team gathered in Edmonton yesterday to prepare for next month's World Cup, standout striker Andrea Lombardo remained in Toronto and banged bodies with one of the toughest players in MLS. While others headed to the showers, Lombardo remained on the field as Andrew Boyens launched a long pass to him. Back to the goal, Lombardo gathered the ball and controlled it while his mentor – in this drill, his tormentor – Danny Dichio mauled him. Lombardo absorbed the bump, gave one of his own, then pivoted and drove the ball into the goal from 15 yards out. When Canada kicks off the U-20 World Cup July 1 against Chile, it will need Lombardo to utilize the toughness, poise and ball control he and Dichio worked on yesterday. Lombardo is scheduled to join the national team in Edmonton after Toronto FC's game on Sunday. Right now, TFC needs his talents even more.
