From US Soccer:

The first game (Canada v. Costa Rica) is still 0-0, and there's 10 minutes left. How the U.S. game is going to kickoff at 7 p.m., we have no idea. Need to clear the field, do the FIFA anthem and each country's anthem all in like 10 minutes. Guessing we're starting late, especially since TV Jamaica isn't showing either of these games. They informed us they're filming just the Jamaica games, and they aren't even doing those live, rather tape-delayed the following day. From what we've seen in this first match, Costa Rica has had the better of the chances, but Canada's 'keeper has stood his ground.

Canadian keeper is Julien Latendresse-Lévesque and I heard his name quite often during the last 30 min. Don't know what he was doing but it seems that they were a lot of action near his goal.

So, it seems that he's our real #1 and Street is #2. Latendresse-Lévesque had a try out in France with Metz last fall.

Nice, we stay in first place and will remain there until our next game. One more win, like vs. T&T, and we are in.

The T&T squad is supposed to be very talented:

Shots---------------- USA 8--- T&T 10

Shots on goal----- USA 3--- T&T 3

Corners-------------- USA 2--- T&T 3

Yellow ---------------USA 3 ---T&T 0

Red------------------- USA 1--- T&T 0

Statistically, it's hard to believe they lost this game by 3 goals. Canada will have to play a rock solid game to clinch.

Canada 0-0 Costa Rica

April 30th, 2007 For our Canadian friends - a few details on the CONCACAF U17 World Cup qualifying match tonight in Jamaica

Canada vs.

Costa Rica

Match Highlights

1st Half

7th - Diego Brenes with a close-range drive, palmed over the bar by

Canada’s Julian Latendress-Levesque.

12th – Greg Smith with an excellent run down the right is bundled over the area while delivering a cross, but no penalty given by the Referee from Aruba. Costa Rica Leonel Moreira deals with the cross and play continues.

17th – Marcos Urena plays a nice 1-2 with Daniel Varela before firing a bullet that Julian LL manages to deflect just wide of the net, but Canada’s Daniel Tannous clears the ensuing corner kick.

31st – David Guzman with a long-range effort for Costa Rica that sails just over the bar.

33rd - Canada right back Greg Smith receives the match’s first yellow card for a rough challenge on Oviedo Bryan as the latter advanced down the left wing.

39th – Esteban Luna plays a dangerous through ball but Julian LL is off his line well.

44th – Kyle Porter earns a corner for Canada. Philippe Davies’ dangerous cross is cleared away with a header from Roy Smith.

2nd Half

Humidity has dropped and a cool breeze blows through the stadium as the 2nd half begins. Both teams would be OK with a draw, but to have 6 points midway through the 2nd of 5 matchdays must be a pretty appealing idea.

50th – Good chance for Marcos Urena after a through pass from Diego Brenes, but Urena’s drive is well wide.

51st – More pressure from the Ticos but Julian LL comes off his line well to jump on a pass in the area.

59th – Costa Rica’s David Varela comes the closest to scoring thus far with a drive from the edge of the area that goes narrowly wide.

67th – Canada’s Kyle Porter nearly gets on the end of a long ball from Devin Gunenc, but Costa Rica GK Moreira comes off his line well.

70th – Miscue by Moreira on a longball leads to a Canadian corner. Daniel Tannous reaches the cross with a header but it’s gathered comfortably by the Costa Rican goalkeeper.

83rd – Costa Rica substitute Josue Martinez shows some speed with a quick burst down the right, but his dangerous-looking cross is handled by the excellent Julian LL.

92nd – Nothing comes of a Canada deep free kick or a Costa Rica corner in stoppage times and the match ends in a 0-0 draw.

Summary: With each getting a win on Matchday 1, both teams apparently felt a draw in this match kept them on a very good path toward qualifying for the World Championship. Much of the match was played in midfield and both teams seemed to concentrate for the most part on staying organized and giving nothing away.

Performers of Note

Canada right back Greg Smith gets forward and tackles equally well.

Costa Rica’s Roy Smith is a very talented central defender.

Costa Rica forward Jorge Castro is the most dangerous attacking player on his team.

Canada’s Philippe Davies has good vision and feet in midfield, but ran out of gas.

Canada central midfielder Oliver Lacoste-Lebuis is a very good ballwinner and can start the attack with accurate passing.

seems for our next game against the U.S., they will be without their best attacking player. Another 0-0 draw would do us wonders.

One down moment for the Americans came in the 80th minute when McLoughlin was sent off with a red card for throwing an elbow.

"We got the third goal in the second half and, as young kids are prone to do, I think we lost our composure a little bit by having a player thrown off and get three yellow cards," Hackworth said. "In the end, we did kill the game off, get our three points with a shutout. We think we can get stronger as the tournament goes on and that's what we're going to try and do.

"We lost our best attacking player. No question. He's our leading goal scorer and the most dangerous player on the field for us. It's going to affect us, but we have a deep team and hopefully some of the other guys step up.""

The U.S. is the only country to qualify for all 11 previous under-17 world championships.

Good post, I saw that too on the US Matchtracker, the guy with the second goal is out. What is clear is that T&T seems to have had as many chances and the US was quite physical trying to defend their lead. I like our chances against them, we seem to have rested a few guys and though we have to be tired we are close to qualifying.

Played for a draw and got one against the Ticos. Unbelievable we were not awarded a PK by the Aruban referee when Greg Smith was fouled at the shoulder of the crease. It seemed the Costa Ricans were playing for a tie as well. At a number of times during the game every player on the field other than the one with the ball was stationary and keeping their team shape.

Humidity (it had rained hard all afternoon) was a factor in the first half although it was cooler in the second half. I believe our boys were emotionally drained after the huge high of Saturday night. I can't imagine any one of them fell asleep before about 4am on Sunday after crushing the locals in front of the biggest crowd most had ever played before and scoring three, yes count them, three goals. Our men's teams don't score three very often. I think SH understood the temperature of his team and we played very defensively.

Americans were a disappointment. T&T played much beter than they had against Costa Rica but I guess everyone gets up to play the US(and yes the fans were shouting USA) (YOU -S*** - EH?). Red card to US top scorer Ellis Mcloughlin was deserved. His second yellow was for a viscious elbow to the face of a T&T defender competing for a header. US's second highest profile player Zimmerman, never got on the field against T&T. He'll be raring to go against us.

Rest day today and they will need it. Americans are very fit and physical. Basically the same team we lost 1-2 and 0-1 to in Bradenton but we are stronger now. Don't count us out. This is a character group.

Hard to single anyone out. They have played as a nice unit, moving the ball around and supporting each other whenever a breakdown has occured. I can think of great plays by almost every boy and I can think of errors by almost every boy. The outstanding thing has been their team play which is commendable given that of all teams in the tournament our boys have likely had the least amount of playing time together.
