beachesl
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/f/fulham/6543541.stm Although Radz fans will not be happy given Coleman´s devotion to Radz, I am happy. Apart from acting like a jerk on the sidelines, I have a real hate-on for Coleman´s part in the defining moment of Canada`s last WCQ non-qualiying campaign (gotta get around to writing that article on the defining moments of Canadian WCQ since 1968!!!). August, 2004. Yallop, trying to be the nice guy, decides to let his Euro based players play their club matches the weekend before the Wednesday Semi Round opener at home against Guatemala. Yallop could have insisted under FIFA oversea rules (5 clear days before competitive match) that they fly to Canada on the Friday to begin preparation. Among the complications (remember De Voz¨s false dignosis in Vancouver on his knee?) Radz plays the Saturday match for Fulham, and is pulled late in the match for a supposed victory. Coleman announces after the match that Radz picks up a "knock" and cannot play for Canada. Radz stays silent, going along with the charade. Yallop does not insist on Radz coming to do his own check, which is standard National Association policy in most countries (including Australia, who have severely sanctioned players and clubs for indulging in this nonsense, their hardball tactics being a core feature of their recent international progress). Radz`absence compounds an already confused roster situation, and the resulting loss to Guatemala setting the whole tone of the round results. Radz plays the next Saturday match as if nothing has happened. Coleman, burn in hell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I find that difficult to believe as I don't ever remember a weekend where every club in the English Premiership were missing all their international players. Either the rule is 5 days and the rule is literally never enforced, OR it's more like 48 hours. I think it's the latter.
Grizzly
Seems like the guy that should be blamed in this situation is Yallop. WCQ seemed to be pretty important to everyone except for our head coach. Players should be called on the first date we have a right to call them so they can train properly and avoid injury. This is not a time to be doing clubs favours like before a friendly match. Letting the players play on the weekend compounded the difficulty of having them fly to Vancouver for the match leading to jet lagged players who had not trained together. This was the crucial match of our WCQ, pretty much a must win and we played extremely poorly. If Radz did indeed fake injury during our WCQ campaign then this does not look very good on him either. What is your proof that this did happen?
beachesl
1. The FIFA rule is (and was at the time) 4 days before a competitive national team on the same continent, 5 days if on another continent. Yallop could have used the 14 day pre-release period -at the time it was 21 days!- (which Euro coaches say prevent them from hiring more African players because of the African Cup every second January) for future Gold Cups as a bargaining chip, but his philosophy at that time was to draw a distinction with Osiek by being the open "players" (ie: not standing in the way of club opportunity) coach. The 48 hour rule is for freindlies. see: Regs, see page 16 2. No way I can directly prove the Coleman conspiracy, but it was obvious the way it was done ( I saw the BBC interview of Coleman, nudge nudge wink wink, rught after the "knock" ) and what happened afterwards. I have been around the block with this for awhile. Radz playing the Saturday afterwards was the confirmantion only. Radz was no friend of Yallop, and was going through a rebellious period at the time, but his efforts since for the nats have somewhat redeeemed him in my mind. Grizzly
I always thought Radz liked Yallop but regardless any player faking injuries during WCQ is dispicable regardless of his relationship to the coach. However, the criticism is only valid for Radz if the above is in fact true as it is certainly possible that he did receive a knock that kept him out of action for several days. It should also be mentioned that holding the game in Vancouver probably did not encourage clubs to send their players enthusiastically. Yallop was hired to qualify us for the WC. He should have used every means at his disposal to do so. Since he was a new coach he needed every day possible to practice with the team. He needed to do whatever necessary to avoid any injuries or games played by club managers. If he failed to do so as beaches is stating, then it is yet another knock on his competence and committment to the responsibilities of the job as national coach. bingham
The Truth is Chris Coleman is a good guy and didn't deserve to get the boot. With Radz he only did what any other club manager has done over the years with international call ups. Radz himself has played very well under Coleman this year. Yallop was a failure as a national team manager and to me is a typical second rate Anglo-rooted manager who may succeed in the lower expectations of an MLS situation, but was merely mediocre, with little creative ideas, and one who certainly floundered in the specialist international manager role. As much as I like Dale Mitchell we need to hire an experienced CONCACAF coach with maybe Mitchell as his assistant, with Mitchell spending time in Europe as opposed to concentrating solely on Vancouver based Canadians.
