USL Should Follow MLS Lead...

Recommended Posts

On Game presentation standards introduced by Don Garber today:

Game Presentation

MLS has implemented certain standards for pre-game presentations that will occur at all MLS games.

Teams will line up alongside each other in the tunnel prior to emerging for kickoff.

As teams enter the field, led by the referees (FIFA style), a new MLS anthem will be played.

A new MLS anthem and signature sound was recorded last month by a full orchestra in Prague, Czech Republic, under the direction of an American conductor. More details on this piece of music will be revealed on April 6 on MLSnet.com.

In-stadium commercial PA announcements during play will be significantly reduced.

MLS has established guidelines for field maintenance, including:

The length of the grass cut and optimal watering schedules prior to the match

The pattern of directional cuts, so as to assist fans and referees better view offside decisions

It looks to me like they're really paying attention to what the Prem does.

You know this is one of those things I thought I never paid attention to. But now I realize I do.

In fact I quite dislike this slowly walking out holding the hand's of kids while the Champions hymn plays. It makes me bloody nervous. The normal thing for an athlete before competiting is to be moving his body, doing a little short warm-up before the kickoff. All of those processions and anthems drive me nuts, I can't take that sort of slo-motion before a match. It's like I am empathizing with the poor players who are just dying to get over all the bs and play.

As for grass, well it was the case that grass in North America was in general too long, base too soft, and if not in a naturally rainy region, overly dry. We all know the way it should be though: short, over a smooth hard base, and then watered previously to soften it and help the ball both run and settle. Too soft players tire more quickly and the fast players can't get those bursts, you lose explosive movements and provoke fatigue; too hard and the ball does not settle, it is crazy to control, the passing game suffers. Soft causes muscle injury, overly hard tendon and joint problems.

Grass conditions are not at all irrelevant and it is good MLS is paying attention to the question.

Whatever happened to adjusting one's game to the conditions? These guys are supposed to be professionals, better at the game all round than everybody else which includes coping with field conditions. Sheesh, what's up with these players that they can't play the game or injure so easily if the pitch is a tad too soft or too hard or the grass 1/4 inch too long? All the more reason to switch to FieldTurf, never changes, always the same, doesn't need to be watered or mown (within reason).

Thank Gawd.

Forgotten how bad it can be until I caught the Battery-TFC webcast there the other day.

Yikes. Horrible stuff.
