Gian-Luca
First MLS game, even if it is only a friendly, as part of the 2007 Carolina Cup. Not sure what time the game starts, but it is today. Toronto will be without Carl Robinson, Adam Braz, Andrea Lombardo & trialists Gray & Lumley who will all be on international duty. Houston will be without De Rosario for international duty as well - hooray for Canada! [8D]

MM2
Just got back to the hotel from the doubleheader. First Impressions: Charleston is a beautiful place to visit, lots to see and do, very friendly people. The Battery supporters tailgate was awesome, thanks for the Mobuis beer, tasted great!! Will be back on Wednesday. Got to talk with a lot of the Battery supporters. After the Toronto game, Greg Sutton's parents came over and introduced themselves, very nice. Spoke with two Chicago Fire supporters during the Battery game, they have 350 fans coming up to Toronto for the May 12th game. Given that TFC is the only MLS team not to face any Pro teams yet and that Houston had three Champion's Cup matches, TFC played very well. Toroto played a 3-5-2. Attendace 2000-2500?. Temperature, 29C when we arrived at the stadium, 20C when we left. Record breaking temperatures are predicted for tomorrow. Greg Sutton (90m) Two goals allowed, complained to the ref that he was inteferred with on Houston's first goal from a corner kick, the second goal was definitely offside, the AR got caught out of position and missed the call. Pozniak (90m) A number of long passses to no one, had some problems defensively, probably weakest player on the team tonight. Boyens (90m) This kid is solid, going to be a star in this league. Brennan (90m) Good game, nothing spectacular. O'Brien (90m) Offensive performance not up par, but made defensive play of the game, usually had a lot of space to work with. Mulrooney (90m) Solid defensive game, seems to have lost some of the offensive skills he showed prior to the injury. Asante (90m) To me he was the surprise of the game, looked lost defensively at times but otherwise a very positive performance, seems to have adapted well to the speed of the MLS. Cancela (90m) Average game Welsh (63m) When he was good he was very good, when he was bad he was very bad, great runs with the ball but tended to hold it too long when passing options were open. A number of crosses that went to no one. Canizalez (27m) Limited time. Edson Buddle (90) Had a few chances, obvioulsy didn't convert Eskadarian (80) Solid game worked hard created chances Ibrahim (10) Didn't get a chance to show his speed. Joey Melo replaced someone, played about 15-20 minutes (I don't have my notes with me so some of the sub times could be wrong)

marktci
Globe and Mail report: Huston Dynamo defeat Toronto FC in exhibition game LARRY MILLSON Major League Soccer champions Houston Dynamo defeated expansion team Toronto FC 2-0 on Saturday night in an exhibition game in Charleston, S.C., the opener for each team in the Carolina Challenge Cup. Houston had a goal called back after five minutes on an offside call. Brad Davis's corner resulted in a goal by Ryan Cochrane in the 16th minute to put Houston into the lead. Later in the first half, Edson Buddle had a chance to tie the game but his curling shot missed. The tournament rules state that teams are allowed to make unlimited changes to their lineup and Toronto made its first change in the 63rd minute when Andy Welsh, recently acquired from the English team Sunderland. was replaced by Maycoll Canizalez. Chris Wondolowski scored with 18 minutes left in the game. "There was good and bad to this game," Toronto FC head coach Mo Johnston said. "The first half we were even with chances, but we were tired near the end." Toronto will take Sunday off, before returning to practice on Monday. Their next game in Charleston is Wednesday against the New York Red Bulls. The team announced Saturday, that goalkeeper Jon Busch has been waived by the club. Busch was acquired March 5 off waivers from the Columbus Crew. Scoring: Houston: Cochrane (Davis) — 16' Houston: Wondolowski (Goldthwaite) — 72' The lineups: Toronto FC: Greg Sutton, Jim Brennan, Andrew Boyens, Chris Pozniak, Richard Asante, Ronnie O'Brien, Andy Welsh (Maycoll Canizalez 63), Richard Mulrooney, Jose Cancela (Abbe Ibrahim 70), Alecko Eskandarian (Joey Melo 81), Edson Buddle. Houston Dynamo: Pat Onstad, Craig Waibel, Eddie Robinson, Ryan Cochrane, Kevin Goldthwaite, Chris Wondolowski, Kelly Gray, Brad Davis, Paul Dalglish (Corey Ashe 77), Ali Moreno, Stuart Holden Linky Edit: It appears that the Globe and Mail is going to be the paper of record for Toronto FC. Good on them.
georg
Great, both Goalkeepers were Canadian. Don't see that everyday.
Gian-Luca
By the TFC site report it would appear Pozniak played centre-back, with Braz & Reda out of the line-up. Poz is a versatile player, but he hasn't played there much in recent times (for the U20 team he was really playing sweeper rather than a proper centre-back as he did against Hungary), wouldn't surprised me that he might have struggled under the circumstances. Gordon
I might be wrong but as I suggested in another thread, it seemed to me from the game reports that Poz has been mostly playing as a CB for TFC</u>. At least, that is the impression the lineups have given me.
marktci
Not entirely relevant to this thread, but I'm going to build on my previous comment about the Globe and Mail (and tie it back to TFC). Their TV columnist, John Doyle, is also an occasional soccer columnist and attended the Ireland/Wales match at Croke Park on the weekend. His story appears today and contains one relevant detail: quote:One sign of the mediocrity, especially on the Wales side, was the time it took for Wales to achieve a corner kick. The first came after 62 minutes of play. In fact, the best player for Wales was midfielder Carl Robinson, who will be playing for Toronto FC when the Major League Soccer season opens next month.
