Ryan Gyaki

Sheffield United youngster Ryan Gyaki has been handed a trial at Bundesliga Zwei club Hansa Rostock.

The 21-year-old Canadian youth international, who also holds an Austrian passport, is tied to The Blades until 2007 but has failed to establish himself in the Premiership.

Gyaki failed to win a loan move to Yeovil Town after going on trial with The Glovers in October, and he is now ready to try his luck in Germany.

The midfielder will spend two days in Rostock and will hope to impress coach Frank Pagelsdorf, who is keen to strengthen his squad for a return to the Bundesliga.

Hansa are currently second in the table, and enjoy a five-point cushion in the promotion spots.

Before someone jumps in with a "TFC should sign him" comment, they are more than stocked with midfielders and need help at the back.

With JDG2 still sitting out and uncertain, Gyaki has the potential to be the offensively-minded CM that Canada needs to help the strikers. It is a shame about the injury problems. He may have had a great chance at cracking Sheffield's top squad last year while they were still in the CCC. Now that they appear to be staying up in the EPL, it will be very difficult for him to get to make the first squad.

Nonetheless, I sort of hope that he stays in England. It is easier to track his progress there than in Germany. We already have plenty of Canadians in Germany, and apart from McKenna, I think they are at a bit of a disadvantage as far as making MNT squads compared to players who are at a comparable level in England. Of course, the usual rules about needing playing time apply, so if he needs to go to Germany to play and develop, then so be it, but I would prefer to see him in the CCC or SPL.

He played 45 minutes in a friendly game, and scored for Hansa. After the game he found of the team and the coach.

They did not decide yet to sign him, but also from Coach Pagelsdorf he received a big deal of praise. He left a good impression he said.

Headline says "Candian Ryan Gyki soon a Hanseat?"

A loan deal doesn't necessarily fall through because a player is not good enough and I don't think I need to list the numerous other reasons why a player may not catch on with a team. If Gyaki was not impressive I doubt he would be given a trial with Hansa, a team much better than Yeovil. I think we should be concerned with where our players can develop and not where we can follow their progress or as often with our players in England lack of progress in the media. Germany is a much better country at developing talent than England as we have seen with our own youth players who have played in both countries. (And the soccer media is also better in Germany, the English media covers most of the stars personal life and ignores even the lesser players let alone developing players. There are enough German speakers on the board to provide us updates.) Players in Germany have not been at a disadvantage for getting called to the national team. Stalteri and DeGuzman were regular callups when in Germany. At the moment with those two having moved on we only have one player who is a steady starter in the 1st and 2nd Bundesligas and he is a steady callup. Imhof I suspect is finding out that the 1st Bundesliga is above his skill level and the 2nd Bundesliga guys are all young guys establishing themselves.

We should be happy that Gyaki is getting a trial with Hansa who look like a good bet to promote to the 1st Bundesliga. They have been a good team for some time now, have a new stadium and also have a good coach. He might get more playing time if they stay in the 2nd Bundesliga but he has a lot of talent and if given the chance hopefully he can fully use it. The main thing is he has to avoid the numerous injuries that have plagued him for some time. If he doesn't catch on with Hansa hopefully he can get a trial at a mid-table 2nd BL club. According to the article posted by frank, Gyaki speaks German very well.

I hope too, that we will see another Canadien playing in Germany next season. I can not compare the coverage of the english press, as I´m not really interested in. But it´s true that players here have better chances to develop.

Best examples are Paul Stalteri and Julian De Guzman. Both came to Germany, worked hard and finally both played a dominating role on Hannover and Bremen. I guess there are not that much Canadians who can affirm that they became German Champion and Cup Winner.

Julians name is accompied with the success Depor has at present. I also hope that I can tell you the same in connection with Josh Simpson. As he plays for my hometeam, I follow his steps with big concern. That can help also your national team to qualifiy for next world cup.

By the way Ryan Gyaki also has an austrian passport, that´s the reason why he speaks good german.
