raptor
Any news on what teams have signed agreements with the CSL for the coming season. There is hardly any updates on their web site, terrible for a semi-professional body, with paid administrators. Hope that this league and others will take some note from Toronto F.C. regarding communication, updates, season tickets etc.
Guest HamiltonSteelers
Sigma, they will be back. There's another 'meeting of the minds' coming up sooner than later which should hash out more of the schedule and all-star games, finals, etc.
Guest HamiltonSteelers
No worries. If more info comes out, I'll letcha know. My contact is working with the organization and we spoke recently.
Elias
That last press release also says there will be 10 teams in the league. That would make sense if Caribbean and Brampton are gone. However, it says there will be 5 teams each in the Int'l and Nat'l divisions. That doesn't add up. They should put Trois-Rivieres in the int'l division. raptor
Re:number of teams in leaque Oakville blue devils are no more, there was a disagreement with the Oakville soccer club,re facilities etc???, and as they were playing as a sub contract under the metro lions franchise, they have gone back, and are playing as Canadian Lions in the international division, from Birchmount stadium. SoccMan
The Oakville Blue Devils are a youth soccer club with about 10 000 registered players who should be able to by themselves operate a semi pro team in the CSl. It makes you wonder where does all their money go and what happens to all these players after they stop playing youth soccer for this club. Rocket Robin
For Immediate Release Ten teams in two divisions CSL WILL KICKOFF MAY 11 TORONTO – Monday, April 2 - The Canadian Soccer League will kickoff its 2007 season when Windsor Border Stars travel to Centennial Stadium in Toronto’s west-end for the Portuguese Supra home opener on Friday evening, May 11, an 8 p.m. kickoff. Canada’s 13-team pro soccer league will field 10 teams in 2007, to play a five-month long regular season of 110 games through to the playoffs mid-October, leading to the championship final later that month. That’s a 22-game schedule for each of the five teams in the National Conference and five teams in the International Conference. The International Conference is a new division launched in 2006. National Conference teams are London City, North York Astros, St. Catharines Wolves, Trois-Rivieres Attak and Windsor Border Stars, while the International Conference teams representing their country of origin and centered in the Toronto area are Canadian Lions, Italia Shooters, Serbian White Eagles, Portuguese Supra and Toronto Croatia. Brampton will return next year joined by others, including Quebec City, a new franchise in the National Conference and African Icons in the International Conference. Canadian Lions is a team owned by the Milan Group which has secured the rights as the Canadian member of the international division, to replace the previous Oakville Blue Devils. Trois-Rivieres Attak is a new team in the Province of Quebec introduced by owner Tony Iannitto of last year’s Laval Dynamites. Attak is the reserve team for Montreal Impact of the U.S.-based USL First Division. Brampton Stallions, which represented that community to the north-west of Toronto last season, is taking this year off, while the franchise of last year’s Caribbean Selects was revoked by the league during the off-season. The season will include the popular Open Canada Cup competition of CSL teams together with some of the best senior amateur teams in Central Canada. The complete regular league schedule is attached. Rocket Robin
Well here's the schedule. Interesting where the teams are playing. Both Serbian White Eagles and Portuguese Supra play at Centennial Stadium this year. Toronto Croatia move away from the forest in Streetsville to the field at The Hershey Centre. Windsor play some games in Michigan this year (I know they played two years ago, but pretty sure not last year). First game is usually a showcase but runs into the Canada vs Argentina Under 20 exhibition which every Toronto FC season ticket has a ticket for that night. MM2
Wow, this must be the earliest that the CSL has ever produced their schedule, hopefully a sign of good things to come.
raptor
The league should be interesting, apparently, both the Canadian Lions and Toronto Supra, are playing amateur status,no paid players, expenses only. Presumably this is to encourage local talent and the large number of college players coming back during the summer, Unfortunately,I hope these clubs realise that college players are only around until the 2nd week of August, the season goes on a long while after this. L.T.
So are Italia Shooters - and I believe London City have always been all-amateur. So that's 4 out of 10 teams that are strictly amateur - should the CSL just re-invent itself into a PDL North, or is there still a place for semi-pro soccer in this country? Richard
NCAA rules prevent any NCAA players from playing in a league where professional players also play plus the CSL puts itself forward as a professional league which means categorically no NCAA players. Signing an amateur contract does not work.
L.T.
That was my impression, but comments from the Italia Shooters owner imply that the NCAA now has no issue with ALL-AMATEUR teams playing in the CSL... I'm going to dig around the NCAAC site to see if it's in writing anywhere...
Richard
I would be most interested to know if there has been a change in the NCAA rules as you suggest but somehow I doubt it. Please email me if you find anything.

L.T.
Posted on my site (www.ontariosoccerweb.com) Canadian Lions 1990 Boys The Canadian Lions, previously known as the Oakville Blue Devils, is a high level Developmental Team playing in the professional Canadian Soccer League, playing out of Birchmount Stadium in Scarborough, and coached by accredited coach Goran Miscevic. What this means is that although the team will be competing at a professional level of play within a professional league, no player will be paid. The reason the Club is doing this is to protect the amateurism of its players. As well, we feel that in order to accelerate the growth and development of an already skilled young soccer player, a professional league such as the Canadian Soccer League is the best environment for a high level Development Team. Canadian Lions has taken an approach to meet the requirements of the NCAA by-laws with respect to amateur players and their eligibility for U.S. college and Canadian university scholarships and are following these by-laws strictly and working closely, and communicating, with the NCAA. This will protect a player’s ability to seek and obtain scholarship as a student-athlete within these collegiate systems, if that is what they choose to do. Open Tryouts: Practice is held every day at Centennial Park at 6:45pm, and Saturday's at 10:30am.
