Daniel Fernandes called agian by Portugal

Fernandes has again been called by Scolari to the Portugal National Team for the next two important Euro qualifiers against Poland and Serbia. The last time he was called to the team was as the third keeper, as Scolari wanted to have a closer look at him. I guess he liked what he saw. Quim the Benfica keeper is hurt, and Fernandes is next in line. If Fernandes continues his good performances, in a few years time he will be Portugal's #1 keep, but not good enough for Yalop, Mitchell, and Canada. (Sorry but I couldn't resist)

Funny because in fact his season has been a bit less consistent than last year's. The team has lost a few games by more than a goal (did not happen all last year), have given up three in a few games. Can't say they have gotten too many epic results and are not really shining, though still in the mix for the 4th spot in the league and a UEFA spot.

In any case, the general opinion is that Portugal keeping situation is dire, a lot of foreign keepers in the league, so he is being moved in with a mind to widening the pool of those playing regularly at a high level. It is a huge boost of confidence for him, I wonder if with this he will play the European u-21 championship this summer.

If I'm not mistaken, he is too old too play. He hasn't bee called to any of the camps Portugal has had througout the year. I do think that him being called to the team will raise his profile. My guess is that he will be sold by PAOK this summer, and being a part of the Portuguese National team will increase his value. I've also heard rumors that PAOK will be doing a North America tour at the end of the season, and that Toronto is on that tour. It would be great to see him play here in Toronto, and to see what kind of reaction he would receive.

I hope they play TFC, so I can personally heckle him.

I think they are allowed a few overage players, not sure if it is related to Olympic qualifying for example, so the u-21s look a bit like future u-23s. But he is expected to be in the championship, to be held in Portugal this summer. Meaning he would be slated to be a keeper with Portugal at the Olympics if they qualify.

You will recall that he was "capped" as an overage player in a meaningless, but official U-21 game. Indeed, had Portugal anything on the line in that third game of the tournament, Daniel might still be a possibility for Canada. It is a tragedy that such cynicism is eschewed by the CSA and many on this board.

Even so, Fernandes is one of the few good players in Paok. The non consistent season you recall is not blamed Fernandes and his performance..but rather Paok's lack of money and players. He is very high respected among the fans of the club and Im shure thats due to his outstanding performance...Scolari must have seen somethin in him..just Canada did not.

I was reading the Phantis board today and it is clear they truly admire him, as you say he is one of the few players they consider to really pull his weight. Many also happen to think he will transfer out sooner than later.

Also read that Benfica has shown interest in him, that he recently renewed his contract which goes to 2011 I think, that he is making something like 250,000 Euros a year as long as he plays a minimum number of games. There is a buyout clause but I think that is irrelevant, in the best of circumstances keepers do not move a lot of money

Actually the current rumours say he's off to Panathinaikos. (The paragraph underneath the photo states that PAO believe they can grab him for an even mil.) Considering that PAOK has been somewhat of a farm team to PAO in recent years, it wouldn't be surprise...

Paok have won last two with Fernandes shutouts, are in 4th but very tight for the last UEFA spot in Greece. Just below is Tam's Panionos.

Jeffrey, you were correct about Fernandes playing in the European U21 tournament this summer. I just read last night that the U21 coach said that he plans to use the five U21 players called to the senior squad for these next two qualifying games. Fernandes, Nani, Mountinho, Hugo Almedia, and Manuel DaCosta will all be called to the U21 tournament this summer in Holland. I guess that mean we won't see Fernandes in Toronto, if PAOK actually do come at the end of the season.

An aside, but Fernandes does have old friends on the Portugal national team, like Helder Postiga, who he was buddies with as a 17 year old in the Porto junior team. I don't think he is going to land amongst so many stars at all star-struck.

Ricardo didn't practice with the team this morning. He's still complaining about an injury he received in the game against Porto a while back. He also missed a few practices before the Belgium game, but was able to play. Belgrade would be a tough place to get your first senior cap. I'll be curious to see what happens.

Like you don't know?

Actually Dani signed for Paok and played for the first year and a half without an agent, or perhaps no formal one. Then I heard speculation (Mendes maybe? or I am confusing with someone else), and I am sure the Portuguese FIFA agents have all descended on him as he had no rep or was ambiguous.

Perhaps things have changed in the last year.

Been in touch with the big guy lately again, but it is so hard to get a clear answer out of him, he's an enthusiastic footballer not a meticulous scribe.

So what nickname should we make for him? Whore Jr.?

I really do wish the Canadian media was more critical of these type of players, instead of always being so ra-ra about it. But I guess this is a deeper cultural problem in Canada than just a few soccer traitors. Oh well.

Sorry, but there is a huge difference between Hargreaves and Fernandes. The latter has played for Canada, proudly and many times. He has made himself available to Canada to play for us even when not wanted. He has made gestures through third parties and third parties have made gestures on his behalf to get him back into the program. He was played when it was convenient for Canadian coaches, and not played or called when not.

So when someone came along who did want him, after being refused by our program he opted for them, after a rather long period more committed to Canada than Canada was committed to him.

This is one key reason why I would never want Mitchell coaching Canada, as his revengeful veto as expressed to Yallop was key to keeping one of the best keepers we have produced since Forrest out of the national program.

And he never comes out saying he is not Canadian, nor renounces his birth identity, nor fakes a Portuguese accent when speaking English.

And he is looking at doing keeping clinics in Van when on holiday, which is not for money I can assure you, it is about giving something back to his home town, something we have never seen from Owen.

The difference is immense, and the personal integrity of one and the other as well.
