RJB
The Gold Cup is certainly a non-appreciated continental championship. I would rank it only as popular as Oceania. The real continental championships are UEFA and Copa America, with the African Nations Cup gaining prestige. Having the Gold Cup every four years may help to increase the popularity of the tournament, as they may then be able to put more into it.
masster
As much as I agree with you, for selfish reasons I want it to stay every 2 years. It gives Canada some meaningful Concacaf games that they might not get otherwise.
JamesW
More important then making it every four years is making every team have to qualify.

I know that the most prestigious continental championship is UEFA where everyone except the hosts must qualify. But they can get away with that as they only have a couple of minnow nations. With CONCACAF there would be too many pointless matches and blowouts. Plus CONCACAF already has the longest World Cup qualifying schedule. (what is it? 18 games now?) bettermirror
conmebol is 18 games. for concacaf you'd only play the max amount of games if you had to begin in the pre-qualifying caribbean rounds. canada for example begins in the "semi-finals" and would play 16 games (6 in the semi, 10 in the hex). Daniel
+2 in the qualifying round (Belize) = 18 games.

Yup... plus 2 against a team like Belize = 18. CONMEBOL has changed their format and will no longer play an 18-match round-robin. They'll probably have two groups which means at most we're talking 10-12 matches.
Daniel
Which means no more Brazil-Argentina in qualifying unless one of them falls out of the top 2.
jagum
IT WOULD BE NICE IF THE CONCACAF TEAMS QUALIFY TO THE WORLD CUP THROUGH THE GOLD CUP. THE GOLD CUP WOULD BE MORE COMPETITIVE, AND I THINK CANADA WOULD HAVE PARTICIPATE IN 2 OR 3 WORLD CUPS BECAUSE OF THE GOOD RESULTS IN THE GOLD CUP 2002 AND 2002.
Daniel
BF: there were serious talks of reducing the CONMEBOL Q's, I guess they didn't pass. That's why they mention the "maintain" (mantiene) of the 4.5 spots and the "todos contra todos" (everyone vs everyone) Q's.
